Could you take and post a few pictures of the process and maybe 1 showing how you knew they were bad? I need to replace my valve cover gaskets at some point and would like to check/replace these while I am in there if needed. Because, like you said, I don't want to have to open it back up 6 months or year later.
I've flushed many crankcases with diesel, marvel mystery oil, motor flush. All works the same. Add 1-2 quarts depending on engine capasity. Let IDLE for 5-10 minutes and drain. Just beware if your engine is really nasty it's best to leave it alone as it will loosen up stuff and it will all build up in your valley and possibly trash your lifters. I only recommend doing this to keep a motor clean.
So finally got it all put back together, and while it runs somewhat better.....still a big miss fire, and it changed cylinder now. Moved one up closer to the front, still on passenger side, 2nd one down from front. Use to be the 3rd one down.
But problem also changed, use to run better with the injector line cracked open. Now I crack it open, and makes no difference how it runs.
Someone please tell me this HAS to be just an injector and no a pump problem.
On the plus side, no more thumping noises at all through the intake.
I will post pictures of the process later tonight or tomorrow.
Swap the mis-firing injector and one on the other bank. See what happens.
BTW, if you've got a good set of glow plugs, you can often find a misfiring or weak cylinder by checking the resistance or voltage(milivolts) of each glow plug when running. The hotter the cylinder, the higher the resistance and the more voltage each will generate. Expect to see somewhere in the range of 40 ohms and 20 mV at warm idle.
Well fixed the problem, it was a bad injector. Runs ok now......but blew another lifter or 2. Has a thumping sound in the intake again, and slight miss fire but runs alot better. Guess i shouldn't of revved the **** out of it when I got mad at it yesterday.
I hope the new lifters start working eventually anyways. I'm not taking this thing apart again anytime soon
I wonder about crud in the oil. I've had horrible luck with lifters myself, though I change my oil regularly and use good filters... the lifters I've taken apart were pretty grimy inside.
I warmed up the engine and changed the oil right after I replaced that bad injector. 25 miles done tonight and no change. Might give it a double heavy dose of seafoam just before changing the oil again before winter storage, got nothing else to lose at this point.
