I have a 65 f100 with a 390, and i was wondering if it was possible to bolt a 351 c trans onto the 390 block. Also if anyone knew how to tell what kind of transmission it is. it came out of a 1973 mustang with the 351 c.
Cleveland's use Windsor style tranny and motor mounts, it won't fit behind your 390. Is the case made of steel? if so it's probably an FMX; if the bellhousing and tranny are aluminum it's probably either a C4 or a C6 (C4 would be more likely...) The C4 is smaller and the bellhousing is a separate piece; C6's are pretty big overall and the bellhousing/case are all one piece.
Thanks for the info. I believe it's an FMX. i also have an optional 460 auto trans. My current standard transmission works great except i was told that an automatic would be more efficient. thanks again, john
As nice as the C6 is it will gobble up 60hp. C4's are less, like 20hp except it will cost you a bundle to get one for the FE motor.....keep the stick and be happy
Alright i understand, I was wondering if the fmx trans would rob horsepower. Also i have a truck automatic transmission from a 460. If that won't work i was wondering what i can do to make the shifting on my standard trans more smooth or create a shorter throw. The gears are so low it's hard to get the type of performance i'm looking for. Thank you again,
So, do you have the 4 spd with granny first or a 3 on the tree. Ford made a very strong 3 spd for the 390 trucks. A toploader like the T-1o 4 spd in the musle cars, I'm using this 3 spd behind a 406 in my model A with a hurst floor. Who needs a 4 spd. with 500 foot pounds of torque. Ford also made a 3spd with overdrive for its 390 powered cars of the 60s. If you dont like to shift use the C-6. I'm runnin one in my 76 F-250 supercab with a 390. It has the tow and go upgrade to the tranny. Nice firm shifts
i posted a reply but it didn't show. I have a 4 speed with the granny gear. like i said before, i have an option to put a 3 spd automatic into it that was bolted onto a 460. how would i be able to tell what kind of trans it is? thank you.
