I see the problem. You need about 10 more splices.
I'm going to go buy a bunch of colored electrical tape tonight so i can make sure everything is at least coded the color it should be. ill be cleaning everything up tonight, ill post a pic of it all cleaned up when i'm finished.
So i printed out the wiring diagram, and color coded it with markers so it was easier for me to read, then laminated it at my office haha. Armed with that, and a new solenoid and ignition switch i went in to get the job done, and that's exactly what happened, once i had which wires were which figured out, everything hooked up the way it was supposed to, and the truck started right up. I snapped this pic of the wiring so you guys know what i was dealing with, clearly this has been chopped up in the past.
Splices & add on with butt crimp connectors are the weakest link in your wiring an can cause problems later right.
I think you should have replaced as much as the wire as possible. Add the small red wire to the solenoid crimp 10-14ga connector together making it one crimp. May be add a fuels to the small red one if needed tho.

You are absolutely right.
I may pull out my solder gun and actually solder the wires together, i know these are weak links, i will likely replace the two sections here with one section, and solder them together. I don't want any electrical issues so i'm going to fix it up to the best of my ability. I considered just ordering a new harness but thats more money than i wanna spend on wires right now. Though i will likely go ahead and do it in the future.
I think you need wire instead of colored tape then soldier one joint.
The correct size of Shrink tube make's a nice water tight connections also.

The center blue section of that wire may be a fusible link. Look close and see if you see: Attachment 215056
These protect wires from frying in cast something is shorted out. A good thing to have. I'd buy one of these to replace it and those crimps.
This is the way the wires were when i got the truck, so that is how i hooked them back up (except for the main battery and starter wire, which i have switched. I have ordered a new ignition switch as well as a new starter solenoid as i fear i may have fried the new one as well, better safe than sorry @ 15$ a pop. I would like to clean up the wiring on this truck as much as possible, but wiring is definitely my weakest point when it comes to backyard mechanics.
I am running the petronix Ignitor and their blaster coil, i have summit racing cap+rotor, and moroso 8mm wires, all new spark plugs.
Yeah, the solenoid really doesn't care which side the pos and starter wires are on but the small hot feeds (yellow) need to be under the pos from the battery side.
Now that being said, it's always best to keep them the way Ford sent them out, with the pos on the left and starter cable on the right as you face it. There were a few applications back in the 80s that had some strange things going on, like diodes in the solenoid or something, can't remember exactly.
