Phase II of sound dampening

Finally got started on phase II of sound deadening the ex (two years after phase I).

Phase I:
-Dynamat extreme plus Dynamat dynaliner roof
-Dynamat extreme in all doors
-Dynamat extreme and Dynamat hood liner on the hood

Phase II:
-Dynamat extreme floor
-Dynamat extreme rear side panels
-Dynamat extreme firewall and dash panel plus Dynamat 4-layer firewall liner

Most of the interior gutted and cleaned...

FYI, dynamat is more of a rattle stop. if you want sound dampening or sound absorption you need a diffrent product it is pretty common to see dynamat misused as a sound dampener though. Read the directions and they even tell you this.

A sound absorption mat is going to be more like the padding stuff you see under your carpet or the mat they attach to the hood and firewall.

One of the biggest areas you can improve on the excursion is the wheel wells. If you look at the inside of the plastic that covers the wheel wheels on the interior you will see sound blanketing. You can buy that stuff and add more to the wheel wells. ( thick moving blankets work as well as it is the same material )

Another product that will aborb sound is recycled rubber matting.

You can go to Home Depot and get a mat to use on the rear cargo area over your carpet or even do the whole floor under the carpet.

FYI.... I was given a large quantity of dynamat and did mine.

I took decibel readings before and after and was seriously disappointed in the dynamat as it was nearly the same. Further research lead me to the real answers.

Looking for my pics from the project. Will post when I find them

Yes dynamat followed by MLV works good. Then adding foil faced batting from Home Depot works really well. I have been stocking up supplies for this project. In florida the roof is a key place to insulate as well.

Yes - I have liner as well - the whole system. Dynamat extreme does well at reducing the tinny sounds and make the environment more relaxed even if sound levels are not significantly reduced. Phase 1 of my project made a noticeable difference making the cabin feel calmer. Another benefit of the liner is heat insulation - especially with the roof done - making it quicker to heat in the winter and quicker to cool in the summer. I especially noticed how easy it is to heat up the cabin in winter.

Only did Dynamat extreme in the wheel wells but the floor will also get hit with the liner. I'll update as I go along.

It's a cargo van with hinged doors.

Every I've ever been in is noisy. Sounds from the engine compartment, the transmission, body mounts and road noise.

On the other hand, the driveshaft, wheel bearings and pumps (steering, water, etc.) are noticeably quieter...until they aren't.

Big pain getting the dashboard out. It is completely free now but to get it out will be more trouble than it's worth. I have enough room now to add sound deadening material.

If it's worth doing, it's worth over-doing.

I really hope this tones down the engine music a little. As nice as the diesel clatter and turbo sound is on longer trips it could stand being a a little more mute.
