I just bought a 53 f100. I noticed engine temperature gauge reads hot when started. Then dips to cold and stays there indefinitely. I was at vintage ford in sacramento they thought it could be engine sensor. Apparently there was a host of sensors several years ago that were bad. Anyway they gave me the replacement. The problem. the new sensor is about 3" long the old one is 2". I guess the length doesnt matter but the threads are wrong too. The new one is about 5/8 thread but old one is about a 1/2". Vintage has no clue what to do now. Does anyone have any ideas? by the way the engine is a 215 cid, 6cyl straight.
I have pics but cant figure how to attach.
I'd return it and try a good local parts store ( not Pep Boys or Advance or Auto Zone) like NAPA or CarQuest. Give them part number 8A 10884 and have them cross reference it to thier part number. Back then there was only 0ne number for 6 or 8 cyl engines. The flatty V8 had 2, but one of them was this number, so it interchanged with the 6 cyl. It should be stamped with a 224 if it's original.
Just a thought: the sensor may be working correctly. Have you checked the temp of the water vs. the gauge? My 55 Fairlane has a stockguage/sensor on the 272. The gauge starts off on the right and crosses to the left then creaps back to the middle. However, as I'm driving and the engine temp falls the gauge hovers around the left side. As it idles, then the temp gauge moves back to the middle. So the moral of this story is that even after you change out the sensor it may still read the same. Good luck, John
Barry, Looked at package that recieved for sensor it does say 8a-10884!!! Im beginning too wonder if the engine block is a 215?
If you get on my gallery I do have 2 pics of block. I cant find any stamping anywhere on engine. I have the shop manual for a 53 and it looks the same. Im perplexed

Yes, you have a 215. You can tell by the location of the distributor, fuel pump and oil filter. The other giveaway, though not as reliable, is the way the exhaust manifold dumps straight down. The 223 dumps back at an angle towards the firewall. Hope this helps!
What the heck is the purpose of the hose that runs from the air cleaner to the valve cover? Definitely not a stock item. Nice truck, by the way!

Well I'm glad I'm not the only guy in the Sacramento area that has truck problems. Richard, why don't you drive your truck to Jaspers in Rocklin on Thursday night?? John in Antelope
If it is different from the old one, then I'd still return it. No sense keeping what doesn't fit. Is your old one stamped with the 224 number? It would be where you put the wrench on. Wire brush it to be sure. I always have good luck with NAPA for old truck parts.
Barry,
Thanks for help by the way...I checked for stamp both on part and on engine. I posted picture of new and current part in my gallery for you too see. I do have a closeup of it attached to engine but too big for site. So could email to you if you think you need too see. thanks again.
John, Whats this thing at Jaspers? might be willing to go. LEt me know details and time. Im going to goodguys show in pleasanton on saturday too get all the info on trucks and what I need to do next!! I really need to network I can see.
Hey Richard, did you get the gauge replaced? Did it fix the prob? Also, Jaspers Burgers is the local cruise in Rocklin every Thursday night. 20-40 cars and trucks. You need to get in the network of cruisers! Go east on 80. Exit on Rocklin Rd. Turn left and go under the freeway. Turn right on Granite Rd.. 100 yds up on your left is the show. $1 to $3 donation for the Boys and Girls club is totally optional. They have a good raffle and good food. 5-8PM We'll see you there and I can let you in on the other local cruises. Look for 55 ALIVE. John
Hey,
Did you ever resolve the problem? I'm rewiring my 53 6cyl 215 6v and have the SAME problem! The TEMP gauge goes to the COLD Peg. Prior to my rewiring, the gauge was around the middle. The Oil Pressure is pegged past 80 also (it's been that way for awhile though - and I've tried 2 other oil pressure senders).
No never fixed.... I think I cracked block but cant be sure.... I was driving one day and came back there was fluid all over floor next morning. Long story short, removed head, replaced new head gasket...still leaked between head and block so took apart again and tried again then when I was tighting snapped bolt (I wasnt even at torque yet). So not sure what to do.... I may just tear apart truck and rebuild with new engine etc. Im sure engine can be fixed...I may take down to someone and have them look at..
