I have an '84 351W that I'm thinking about rebuilding. I'm alittle reluctant because of the overbore someone has done to it in the past. Right now it's bored 040 over but looks good. I know if I really want to persue this than I should have it hot tanked, magnafluxed and probably have it sonic checked for soundness. The only problem with all of that is the cost to due it - especially if I find out the block is no good. I'm on a tight budget. And I don't plan on racing this thing anyway.
I was told at one time the block had a high nickle content. There is supposedly a marking on the block to distinguish from a "normal" block. I guess this means it would be strong than a regular block, I don't know.
Any ideas? Anyone with experience in this area? If I rebuild it, what about cooling? Will it connect to a C4 (yes I should use a C6 - BUT...)?
I do not bore over 030 on Ford small blocks, have to many pictures mine and friends motors from doing this. I do not know, but the 351W block should be easy to come by, I use the later model one peice block. I would hate for you to spend a lot of money at the machine shop to find that it's not a good block. Some might not agree, but I would see if I could find a stock-untouched block, to build, 030 bore is usally as far as they machine shop will have to go. Another way I have saved money is buying a replacement crank, instead of having mine turned. The last I bought cost $90 and was 10-10, a very good replacement. Also you can buy complete rebuild kits, rings, bearings, gaskets, pistons, that saves quit a bit of money, over buying things seperate. The last 351W I built along these lines cost about $900 complete, after four years now, the motor is still in very good shape, think the man has put about 40,000 + miles on it. If I can help, please let me know.
Just to add to this to some degree if you are not as experienced as the fellow above you can use the block as a core and get one from your local autoparts store. I have seen them for $900-1200 so not that bad that is a long block, just look around they are out there you just have to look. You will get the arguement that the local autoparts store is gonna use cheap parts blah blah blah probably so but it also comes with a warranty. Maybe consider a short block and use your own heads/cam you would be close to that figure above if you use some of the older and cheaper stock heads 70 and down. If you do go the machine shop route there is no guarantee what they are gonna do either, trust me on that one. I have always heard that 40 over on a 351w is risky because of over heating problems, would say it depends on a lot though (how wild a motor you build/how you use it). The c4 will work. Probably knew this already just thought I would throw this out there
