Shackle Pin Lock Pin

Does anyone have a secret to getting these Shackle Pin Lock Pin installed? I have tried everything and it seems they are so tight that they keep mushrooming on me. Would a grade 8 bolt thru that shackle be stronger?

It can be a challenge.
Be sure your shackle pins are lined up right. There is a notch in them and that has to line up just right. Also make sure the notch piece in the lock pin is lined up with the notch in the shackle pin.

I don't think the grade 8 bolt would be a good option, but farmers did just about anything to keep trucks running.

Make sure that the pin is rotated so that when you drive in the lock pin the rib on the lock pin will go into the slot of the shackle pin not hitting the side of the pin. If you have the shackle pin rotated a little too far, the lock pin will turn it as you drive it in. If you don't have it rotated quite far enough, the lock pin will butt against the side of the shackle pin and not go in. I hope that makes sense.

If you have trouble getting the pin in, you have the wrong pin or are doing something wrong. Those pins go in easy.

a few on the back were just really tight. I lined them up and those pins just seem a little to flared to get in there deep enough to get a full nut and lock washer tightened on them

I used a brass hammer to prevent mushrooming. They were a little tight but after fiddling with the alignment they went in OK.

It helps to take the weight off the pin, so it can rotate a little or move in/out to align perfectly.

^^^ Agreed. I hope you're installing them while the spring is still in the same position it required to slide the spring pin through. That would be when there is no load on the pin, preventing it from aligning to the cross pin.

I had one heck of a time with the ones that came with the kit I bought. I ended up reusing the original ones. There is a lot of very helpful tips on this thread (as usual), that I wish I had when I did mine.

This is an older thread but I'm having the same problems. The pins definetly don't go in nicely.
I'm starting to wonder if they are simply a poorly sized reproduction.

In the end I was successful using a brass punch to drive the pins into place. This seems to stop any mushrooming of the heads.
