so I've been looking at getting some new upgraded headlights for my 79 F250 and saw a site that has some LED's but lists only for 79 Bronco, but not for the F series. I've read before that they're the same but can't find that info again. Does anyone here know for sure if they are or aren't the same headlights? Would like to know for sure before I spend the money to buy them. Thanks.
'way back when the Feds mandated uniform headlights there were only a couple of standard sizes. For instance the 7" round was on ALL cars until they introduced the rectangular. The rectangular allowed some styling options in that you could have a low beam light and a high beam light, and you could stack them or put 'em side by side, The round was combined high and low beam only. Replaceable bulb headlights offered better reflectors and more 'tune-able' beam patterns, but were not authorized until the '80s if I recall right.
If you make the switch to LED headlights, do not use the LED bulbs in housing, intended for Halogen bulbs. Use a LED replacement light, built as a unit. LED and HID bulbs, in housings intended for Halogen scatter light everywhere, blinding oncoming traffic and actually put LESS light on the road, where you need it.
the one I was looking at is a whole replacement, a new housing with the LED lights built into the unit. says it is a true plug and play replacement and was just curious if anyone here knew anything about those, like how well they really work etc.
I'm gonna dip into hearsay - my boss spent the bucks and put 7" LEDs on his Wrangler and really likes them - he told me one important thing was to get an actual LED 7" headlight. Do NOT get a headlight unit made for halogens like an H4, and then stick a replacement LED bulb into the halogen reflector - it will not work well.
I am thinking this makes sense; LEDs can be highly directional and I have read of cases where one replacement instrument panel light worked poorly , but others which had the LEDs arrayed differently worked far better. Given that headlight reflectors are designed as parabolas and the light filament should be at the focus, it makes sense that changing where the light pattern sits in the reflector could cause problems.
Got the latest ad mail from Victoria British (they are the British sports car store end of LMC trucks) and they have 7" LED headlights on sale for $219 each.
No financial interest and have not used this product- but since they fit round-headlight Ford trucks, it seems good info to send to anyone interested in an LED conversion.
FYI... if you live in a cold/snowy area, LED headllights running too cool and cannot melt off accumulated snow or ice unless it is equipped with a lamp heater.
