351w swap

Hello, I am a new member to this site. I recently took the 302 out of my truck and put in a 351w. I am having problems finding a set of headers that will work. The original ones were a little too wide on the passenger side to work. I tried shorty's, try-y's and block huggers, non of those will work. Does anyone know a set of headers that will work. Also the truck has a crownvic cradle in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1970f100shortbox Welcome to and the Bumpside Forum.

I think you have customized your truck beyond having standard parts fit. The 351W wasn't offered until several years later in F series, but should easily swap with the 302 since they are the same family.

Really? No shorties headers fit? Apparently not all resources have been exhausted because according to a recent post proved that BBK 1515 shorties do fit...

71-73 mustang long tubes fit on my Cleveland pretty darn well with some modification to the frame cross members.

Like jo said, you're not gonna find anything for a 351w in that truck. Gonna have to make something else work.

I too am surprised that shorts won't fit, they have in the past. What makes your truck/engine any different?

BBK 1515's should fit. The collector points at the edge of the frame on the passenger side, but it's 4" away, and that's easy to deal with. Depending on how your engine is mounted, you may have interference where I did not.

Clevelands and Windsors have a completely different exhaust design, but I understand your theory that the Mustang chassis headers for a 351w might work. With a Cleveland, you should be able to use headers for a bumpside with 351m/400.

They are different in design yes, but the engines are similar in size, and the headers should be roughly the same shape.

400 dent headers would have fit, but would have hung low.. I didn't want low. I go off road. The mustang headers tuck up nice and tight to the body and stay above the cross member.

shorties wouldn't work because of where the clutch linkage pivots from the motor to the frame. I didn't mention the truck was a manual. srod-4 to be exact.
