Exclamation Serious Issues with TouchDrive!!!

('88 Ranger Ext. Cab 4X4)
Here's the deal...I cleaned the motor on the T-case shift mech., brushes are clean and the motor runs when I used some aligator clips and a 12v battery I had layin' around to test it. For some reason I'm not getting power to the motor from the harness. Would this be caused by that fuseable link, or is it the Elec. Control Unit. I can hear the relays clicking, but it still doesn't show power to the motor when I have the meter hooked up. The position sensor works because when I manaully shift it with the shift motor off it registers the correct position on the overhead panel. I'm stumped

My other question is...what is the proper weight (80-90, 80-140?) of oil for the diff.?

Also, the computers at the auto shop keep coming up with my rear diff. as having a Limited-Slip...do all rearends for the XLT's come with a LS diff.?
Please help!!!
Thanks,
Chris

Sounds like you need to check the switch, wiring, and control unit for the 4WD switch. I'm not sure about the '80's control units, but, in the '90's, the control unit had a little self test function. PUsh a button on the unit, and, depending on how a little light flashes, it will tell you if it's in the switch or the module or the shift motor.
My '87 BII calls for 80-90 gear oil in the differentials.
I doubt all the XLT's came with the LSD. The best way to find out is to check the diff tag on the differential (especially if there's a chance that the axle has been changed since new) or the axle code on the door sticker.

Serious Issues with TouchDrive!!!

My girlfriends dad has a 91 Ranger that was doing the same thing with the 4X4 unit. He ended up taking it to the dealer and they replaced the module that sits under the rear seat in the extended cab. After that not a single problem out of the 4X4, it went in and out of four wheel drive just like it was designed to.
