3G alternator ground

3G alternator ground
Hi I'm new here but I've browsed many a thread for help.
Anyways, I'm doing a head gasket on my 96 f150 4.9l and I'm currently reinstalling the alternator. The problem I have is that I don't remember there being a wire attached to the ground stud on the alt, in fact I'm almost certain there wasn't one. There was a black plastic tab and a nut. I've seen pictures of 3G's without the stud at all so basically what I'm asking is was this changed to ground through the case in later models? I just don't want to get it all back together and then have to tear it apart and run a ground strap that was torn off or something. Thanks!
