The more I look into it the more I'm thinking its not going to happen, Its just too much fab work, paint work, 6 new tires, have to buy a spare wheel and tire, more than I was thinking of.
The other thing is will it decrease the trucks value since it was never built as a dually? Ideally finding a short bed dually box close to me would be great but its like finding a hens tooth.
The more research I do the more I think its just a waste of money too, no matter how bad I want a dually, I should just get a new/used 1 when I planned to in a few years.

I went down this planning road to do a conversion and decided it was better to trade in for a dually. with the trade in I got the dually, longbed, v10, 4.11 rear, class V reciver,
the other issue that was not mentioned is a brake rotor size change somewhere between 05 and 08.
also good to note is that there are a lot of e-350 dually rims out there that are different than the f-250/350 rims. the welds are different and Im going to guess that the e-350's changed rotor size later in the game. The rim confusion gets worse when you realize the oval holed and square holed rims are different based on them being e-350 or f-250/350.
I agree, my biggest issue is I don't want to spend the money to do it right (swap a complete rear), and I'm really concerned as to what it will do to the value.
If I could get my hands on a 11-16 drivers side dually fender to see how much work it would actually take that would be the deciding factor for me.
It does everything I need it too just the way it is, but the wife and I are looking at a 5er with a center bunk configuration and I'm not sure how much that will add to the weight of the trailer, so it has the potential to be an issue sooner than later. And yes before I get flamed I know that converting my truck has nothing to do with adding weight carrying capacity.
Ever since I purchased my dually I would never look at another srw for heavy towing. It can be done but I just love the stability of the DRW. We just bought a used 5th wheel that maxes out near 10,000lbs gvwr. Sure it's no monster but towing that vs towing my bumper pull dump trailer is night and day. I like the looks of the SRW trucks with the bigger tires but the dually can't be beat for towing heavy. I did need to purchase a slider hitch however as this 5th wheel will contact at a tight turn. And I've needed to slide it multiple times already.
If you're truly looking at 5th wheels, look for a dually. Sure the SRW can and will do it with likely zero issues. I just feel the DRW is just better at it. And it does have more capacity like you said. Plus if it's heavy on the pin its nice to have the capacity and extra tires.
I already have a 5th wheel...38' Laredo comes in around 13k ready to camp. I run a Goose Box on my truck and the way the nose cone is on the Laredo I can do a 90* turn no problem...That also may change with the new 5er too.
I just looked up that goose box. That's pretty cool. Would work with the BW Companion I have. But then I don't think I'd get the 90degree clearance. The trailer I have is older (2004) so the clearance isn't there like the new trailers that have more of the rounded front ends.
Yea 13k would be a bit much for me in terms of dragging a trailer like that up and down hills. I've towed over 14k in my dump trailer and that's not something I'd want to do on long stretches of hills.

I was really hoping you were going to change your mind because your truck is simply awesome as it sits and I love the way it looks as is..
I'm probably just going to stick with a SRW at this point, put a Helwig in the back, maybe upgrade the front too and call it good. Id just hate to butcher up my truck and the bonus for me is I can still keep it in my shop and not have to move it in and out every day. As a dually it wont fit in the spot it has now.
