I want to put a cab over camper on it but it has to run better first.
Hate to break it to you but you got the wrong truck for a slide in camper..not enough engine.. not enough suspension, marginal brakes. A 5.0 truck motor of this vintage is a pretty weak performer even when running correctly.. for example slowing down into a strong headwind on the highway should be considered normal for one of these. There is lots you can do to get more power out of the motor(cam change, headers and a full exhaust system), but all that extra power comes in at higher RPMs so you will still need to keep it above 2500rpm for everything except cruising on level ground. Adding overload springs or airbags and sway bars will really help with carrying a load but there isn't much available to upgrade the brakes, really what you need is an F250 with a 351 or 460.
I understand what your saying but I'm only looking for a small overhead camper. I've seen Toyotas with them. I've seen some that weight 1000 lbs. and just fit in the truck bed and hang out about 6". The only thing I can do is sell and get a van camper. Just hate to get rid of the P/U.

1000lbs in the bed of a 1/2 ton of this vintage and especially a load with broad sides like a camper will make it a handful to drive on the highway when there are cross winds. The same applies to cargo vans.. I'd never own a 1/2 ton version now after driving everything from an E150 to E350, because the HD trucks just do everything so much better when there is a load involved. I have owned 1/2 ton Ford pickups since the early '90s and love them but they're really only designed for occasional moderate sized loads, for anything beyond that you need to step up to an HD truck.
