How tough is the original differential in my '55 F100? Would there be reasonable life expectations behind a pretty much stock 300-350 CI V8 and auto trans?
The original Dana 44 is probably tough enough, but the selection of gear ratios is limited to what came stock. Maybe 3.92:1, which is fairly steep unless your auto trans has an overdrive gear.
Agreed the gears can be swapped. I also had mine converted to a posi. I have a Ford Racing 306 crate motor in mine for 4 years now and stomp on it now and then. I have done a few burnouts, no issues.
I just added the Weiand 177 blower, so far so good. I do have a built AOD.
I'd really like to change the ring and pinion on the dana 44 in my 56 with a fordomatic. It's 3.92 now and a 3.31 sure would be nice. I'm assuming the carrier would need to be changed out too?
The reason most people go with the 9" has been that 9" axles in decent shape with 3.50 gears were fairly available. I think they're getting harder to find, especially in good shape. The cost of re-gearing a D44 isn't cheap, I'd guess you would be in it for $500 minimum, depending if you can set up the gears yourself. Any ratio less than 3.73 you need a new carrier, too. But if you can't find a 9" that is in good shape already, and have to rebuild that, the cost isn't too much different.
