Smoke!!!

Hi All, I suspect I have a turbo seal leak. My 2004 E350 6.0 smokes like crazy. The smoke is white and smells like you poured raw oil on a hot manifold. Definitely not diesel smoke. How can I tell if it's my turbo without tearing it out?

Thanks

Have you looked under the hood and tried to locate the leak or leaks? Posting some photos will help others help you. Myself and other members look forward to helping out!

I should have been more descriptive - the smoke is from the exhaust, at idle, at higher rpm big time. No smoke or leaks under the hood. Plus the exhaust pipe opening looks oily.

I thought that might be the answer. Does this sound like my problem though?

you'll have to remove the turbine downpipe and inspect to find out for sure.

Yes... the seal is most likely dumping oil directly into the the down pipe and why you see it dripping off the tail pipe.

Ok, I removed the down pipe and oil dripped out. To confirm I then removed the up pipe clamp and spread the joint apart and there doesn't look like any oil going into the turbo from the exhaust. My question is - where can I pick up a turbo without selling my youngest child to pay for it?

You can rebuild it, they sell seal kits that include bearings and seals. You'll need a mounting kit and possibly a unison ring.

Watch a you tube video, not that hard to do, basic tools required for the job.

There's also a write up I did some time ago if it helps you out as I had the same problem, blown turbo seal.

If you do decide to go with new then there are a few options depending upon the engine serial number. I can check to see which one is correct if you post or PM the VIN. There was a TSB released 08-16-13 and it corresponded with the turbo housing replacement, I have attached it. The next few sentences reference the part numbers needed for that TSB. For serial numbers 6,000,000 to 6,155,636 the part number is 3C3Z9G489BBRM and serial numbers 6,155,637+ require part number 4C3Z9G489ACRM. In the part remarks it states that if a unison ring is required then part number 3C3Z6C885A should be used on both turbos. The catalog also states that if a large O-ring is required serial numbers 6,000,000 to 6,155,636 use the part number is 3C3Z00815A and serial numbers 6,155,637+ use part number 4C3Z00815A.

A standard replacement would be part number 4C3Z6K682CDRM. The catalog states that this is for E350 engine serial numbers 6155637-6439200 built in Indianapolis and serial numbers 0094580-0174729 built in Huntsville. I hope that this info helps out.
