Newer Escapes: recommendations?

Hi everyone I figured I'd take a stroll over to this side of the forums as a favor to a family member who is considering a new/used Escape. She had a first gen Escape years ago and really liked it. Unfortunately it was totaled and she replaced it with a used Taurus that has served her extremely well. The Taurus is now 10 years old with close to 200k on it and worn out. Time for a replacement. She doesn't have much money to work with but some. She may or may not need the AWD and Ecoboost. Anyone have any recommendations on the Escape based on your own personal experience? Thanks!

The wife is driving a 2015 SE FWD with the 1.6. At 33K miles and 20 months it has been flawless. Overall fuel average, very little stop and go, 29.4 mpg. Research will show the very early 1.6s had some issues, wiring, coolant leaks, and some minor stuff.

Thanks for that tip about the 1.6 liter. Actually for this person I would steer her toward the 2.5 Duratec motor. It actually gets better mileage in the kind of mixed driving she does. And she doesn't have to worry about putting premium fuel in it. Less to worry about. The 2.5 Duratec has also been around for a long time and very proven.

My 08' AWD Scape with the 3.0 has been real good to me the past six years. It almost has 108K on it and just now starting to need normal maintenance stuff. I put a red top battery in it last year as normal batteries didn't seem to last but a year or two with the extreme cold and heat here in Tennessee.
Love the versatility of them as I constantly have the back seats folded for the dogs / throw things on the roof rack (luggage carrier for long trips) / and haul a utility trailer with the 2" reese on the back. It does a lot...of thing I throw at it without question.

IN the 2013 up the 2.5 is the base engine only offered in the S. so no awd.I had a 01 close to 200,000 miles traded in for my buck fifty. Wife now has a 2010 Escape Limited. no issues with the 2010, the 2001 was great till 160,000 then at different times 2 wheel bearings and fuel pump.I bummed trading it in great suv.

Wasn't 2013 the first year for the new generation Escape? 8 recalls. That's why I never buy first model year, I've learned Ford always needs at least that first year or two to get all their bugs worked out. Same thing with the F-150 form 2011 through the early part of '12. I've got a 2012 model that was built in June of that year, so fairly late in the model year. I've only had it a few months so far, but it seems to be flawless. And Ford isn't the only one by far. Every manufacturer has their new car bugs they deal with, some take 3-4 years to get them all sorted out.

I just checked the Ford site... the 2.5 is only offered in the base "S" model. Same as it was in 2014 though I heard that you could get a 2015 SE with the 2.5. I love our base 2.5. It is not fast but livens up when in "S" driving mode. It handles well and has all of the bells and whistles that I was looking for. My wife feels safe. More "stuff" on a car means that down the road more of that "stuff" will break down. Good luck!

Also, the new 2017 models received a refreshed look that is sharp. They did a good job and the sales figures prove it even if the auto magazines shun the Escape. I'd dig a Titanium 2.0 turbo if money flowed a bit more my way!

That's exactly my thoughts as well. Keep It Simple Stupid also means keeping it reliable later. And a non-turbo engine means also less spinny things to break once it gets up around 200,000 miles or so! I may be a cheap-skate, but I'm a smart cheap-skate! Lol

I got rear ended in the 2014 Escape 2.5L base model earlier this year. A 2006 Cadillac SRX hit me going 40 MPH while I was stopped. I was thrown into the back seat. $3500 damage which was fixed. The car handled the impact well. The Caddy was messed up. Go figure. That accident proved that modern technology has made vehicles safer. I hated to see my wife's newer Escape get banged up but I drove it home and time has passed. Small does not mean unsafe anymore. Now I would not want to be broad sided by a Super Duty but I am keeping the vehicle per my schedule. About 8 years should be good before the wife bugs me for a new ride.
