I've owned pretty much nothing but diesels for the past year, from my 7.3 PSD dually, to my 6.4L PSD, to my beloved 7.3 N/A IDI. I thought I'd never own another gasser...
Until I got my 77 with a 460.
It's so damn fun. Who expects a 1977 3/4 ton to do burnouts? I didn't.
But it does. And with true duals, it sounds better than any diesel I've heard. I love the clatter of a diesel motor but the crackle of a big block Ford motor is a new joy I have recently experienced. And it makes a lot more power.

Is it stock? Or what have you done to it? I'm building a 429 for my 78. Can't wait.

I have no idea. Bought it two days ago, the guy who sold it to me said he bought it from his friend who didn't have enough money to pay rent. He had a notarized, signed clean title and I know where he works so I'm not worried about it.
The brakes are bad, but he said if I buy the parts, he'd do them (I don't mess with Ford drum brakes, last time I did, it was disastrous), the power steering leaks a lot, but other than that, it's smooth as a top for $1300.
He said it was a rebuilt motor and it sounds like it might be cammed, but I don't know.
when it comes time for work, nothing beats a diesel but when it's time to play there's nothing like a big block.it's all fun and games until the wallet goes dry at the pump or when smokey flashes his blues.

It'll pass anything but a gas station! I filled it up yesterday, and the main tank is down to below the halfway mark. Isn't it sad that both my tanks work on a 39 year old truck, but my pristine IDI's doesn't work!
Welcome to the dark side that is the Big Block Ford. Ain't nothing like the look on disbelievers faces when you stripe the pavement with a 3/4 ton truck.
Learn to drive with a very light right foot or pay the man at the pump for your fun. I pay at the pump. It's fun.

I'm gonna be paying the man at the pump also. How can you keep your foot out of it when it sounds this good.
I have a fuelie in an 89 f-super duty(one step above a 1 ton) it has a mild cam and 4:56 gears(factory). It weights 9000 lbs with the flat bed dump on it. It is amazing how it runs. It pulls like a freight train in 3rd gear and it runs easy at 70 mph with 4 tons on rock on it. It will pass everything but a gas station. It gets 8 mpg loaded or unloaded. It's not a cruiser but it is a hoot to drive.

I don't even know yet, the door jamb stickers are a lot more complicated on these older models. I don't tow anything more than the occasional dead car on the side of the road, and gas mileage sucks either way, so it didn't matter much to me.
If it says anything, my 7.3 IDI has 3.55s and has way less power.
My ol '96 F250 don't look like much but its got an EFI 460 in it and 4:10 gears. In 4 wheel drive (so I don't smoke tires) it will do 0-60 in 8 sec. Not bad for all stock motor in a 5800lb truck.
I've taken it to a couple dirt drags this summer (200ft dirt track with a pro tree). Love it when the young guys come up in disbelief after a race and say "what do you have in that thing"
