Truck has about 105,000 miles on it and runs fine otherwise. Changed the plugs about 40,000-miles ago, have had to replace the odd COP over the years.
The truck only does it under WOT. Stuff the pedal to the floor and it makes a lot of noise, but is more tortoise, than hare. A lot of popping and sputtering....but obviously not enough to throw a code.
Now, I've had bad COP's in the past that have misfired and thrown codes under the same conditions, but it doesn't seem to happen here.
My nephew has an '04 and it's much stronger accelerating than mine on the highway.
Is this just your typical Ford "garbage" COP design giving me issues, or has anyone found another issue causing the problem? At $100 a piece for COP's, I'm not exactly down with "throwing parts at it" until the problem goes away. So has anyone got any other suggestions?
I had a similar problem. This is how I found it. With the engine cold, I watered the COP and plugs. Then I started and drove immediately. Get it into 3rd gear and give it gas but not floor it. You want to load it up but you don't want it to down shift; keep the RPMs as low as possible. Then it finally threw a code. It was a bad plug.
On another car, I wet the cold plugs and ran it in the dark and I could see the sparks when I rev'd it. It was also a bad plug.
