$4500 truck 2months ago
$4700 engine rebuild.
Now I have a reverse gear grinding (so I was just told). It still engages fine, reverses fine, but thers a loud grinding sound 50% of the time when going reverse.
Do I need a complete engine rebuild? Or can they fix reverse only so that I save $? I'm literally on fumes for the next week doe to buying 3 trucks in the last 3 months. I did have money left over since I knew something could go wrong with these trucks, but this 94 Uhaul has pretty much used all that money that I had set aside for the 3 trucks service/repairs.
It doesnt lack power. It just keeps grinding (when it does grind). The thing is, I was already going to take it in to a transmission shop on the 29th due the the Overdrive light blinking (even though there is zero issues shifting, feels perfect except for reverse).
I got a really good feeling about this place so Im waiting until the old man returns from vacation. He quoted me about $750 i believe, to change the solenoid pack.
Im wondering if i should get get the whole thing rebuilt now... After being knocked out, whats another 2 punches to the face i guess..
Is the engine grinding or the transmission? I thought you just had the engine overhauled- does it already need another overhaul?
Ive driven over 300miles now. up, down hill no problem. Doesn't over heat or knock or lose power. It only happens when im going reverse. It happens when i just let it go on reverse without pushing on throttle, it also does it if I push on throttle, 50% of the time. I highly doubt its the engine, or the brakes since it does it while backing up with or without the brakes. But its never done it going forward, not once. All gears including overdrive shift smoothly without issue. Im wondering if this is why the OD light on the turn signal/steering wheel blinks non stop.
With that being said, no, i dont know if its the engine or not. Sounds too smooth i think.
Also if I let it sit (which i did yesterday for like an hour to test new belt install) it won't make that noise either. If I rev the engine, it doesn't do it either. Only when backing up 50% of the time.
