I have a 77 f-250, I'm having a problem getting the alternator belt back on to the lower engine pulley because the fan pulley is just to close. Is there a magic trick to this or what.
On my 460, both the alt and power steering belts go around both crank and water pump. This in turn will keep the water pump turning no matter which belt decides to exit. There is not enough room to fit a belt between the crank and water pump.
It helps to know what engine you have. My 460 only uses the crank pulley to run the alternator. My power steering and air conditioner run the water pump.
In my case it only goes around the crank but you must first remove the other belts.
If the belt is supposed to go around the water pump you can run the belt over and in between the fan blades on eor two blades at a time to get it where it needs to go.

The belt pattern on my 400 with A/C looks just like this as well. As Orangeford said, you have to have the outer belts off before you can get the alt. belt on.
I've got the same problem with my '76 F-250 with a 460. I've been wondering if the original Ford belt had a thinner depth. I suppose that you could grind a bit of depth off in one place, but that doesn't seem like a good solution. While I was doing a water pump job I put on a new one. If it breaks on the road the fix may be difficult.
