Radio suggestions

Finally got my gauge cluster repaired. So now the radio works!! The issue now is that when I was trying to make stuff work when it first acted up,I may or may not have broken the face on the radio........So now the radio works but the screen doesn't. So lookin to pick your brains about options as far as aftermarket, cheap places to find another factory radio, or what your experiences have been with such things. I'm WAY outside my wheel house with radio stuff

Browse around Crutchfield, they have a good website with lots of information. When you decide what you want, shop around for that make and model.

Junkyard or ebay if you want a factory radio.

First, I'd suggest figuring out exactly what you want in a radio and making a 'check list' of features before you really go shopping for one. For me, my most important criteria was that it had to have at least a 5-band EQ because I'm more of a sound quality guy. Once I got to that price point, I found that I could get a handful more features for ~$20 more, so I went ahead and grabbed a JVC KD-R970BTS unit, which has a 13-band EQ, subwoofer outs and processing, bluetooth/hands-free calling, line in, USB slot and charging port, and a few other gadgets I probably won't use. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it once I got it dialed in.

x2 for crutchfield.
I got one that has a usb so I don't need to bring ipod, I have 3600 songs on a jump drive ready for when the radio sucks. HD radio is also nice, and of course bluetooth for hand free phone.

For factory, check out 1factoryradio2, an ebay seller.
I usually buy from Crutchfield as other have suggested, but one of their chat specialists steered me a little wrong last time around. Told me that I didn't need an antenna adapter/extension to get from my Mustang's factory antenna wire to a Pioneer double DIN unit. He was 100% wrong. But things happen, we all make mistakes.
I won't cut or splice factory wiring in my vehicle sound systems and Crutchfield has always pointed me to the correct harnesses to plug & play the stereo and be able to use the steering wheel controls on more than one occasion.

I replace my radio last summer.. and Best Buy had the antenna adaptor.. but did not inform me of needing it...

and what is UP with antenna adaptors... the Motorola type has been used for 60 years... FYI the FORD antenna uses a Chrysler adaptor.. to Motorola. for a Kenwood radio.

Yup. Crutchfield guy looked it up. Swore that no adapter or extension was needed to get the factory antenna wire plugged into a Pioneer. Wrong on both counts.
I called the local Best Buy. Their car audio installer said yes, you need that and we have them. Also stated that the vast majority of aftermarket stereos have Motorola plugs. $15 and a 25 mile round trip later I had one. Smooth sailing with the install after that.

So it seems like pretty much everybody has gone with aftermarket options huh? Is there any benefit to going with another double din vs a single?maybe make some usable space for switches or a cubby hole/ iPod mount/something like that

All a personal preference. But I like the look of a double DIN install much better. Gives you a nice big (usually) touch screen display. They'll normally have a 3.5 mm or USB port for an iPod/MP3 player. But all my stuff is Apple, so the same music that I have on an iPod is on my iPhone. The iPhone can stream all that music via Bluetooth to the stereo. No wires, no plugging in. The song & artist are also displayed onscreen.
I also went with a satellite radio module and navigation on the double DIN in my truck. A year or so later I had a local audio shop install a rear view camera, which also plugged directly into the aftermarket stereo.
Plus I still have a microphone through the aftermarket stereo for hands free cell phone calling.

That sounds pretty dang handy. And expensive haha I'm gonn have to weigh some options. Although a bigger display sounds good. I'm assuming I would have to find an adapter to go from the Ford harness to an aftermarket radio?

I got a 175 dollar Kenwood... and from that learned about USB thumb drives... so downloaded some music and it plays on truck ...

and Yes this Kenwood is double din, but not touch screen.. cheaper.
but has satellite ready, usb, several other inputs...

I just needed a radio that also would do CD's.. as my "XL" had am/fm ONLY... it was a FLEET truck.

Not really that expensive as Chuck pointed out. All kinds of relatively inexpensive units with the features I mentioned.
Not hard to find the wiring harnesses to plug an aftermarket stereo into your truck's audio harness. I generally use Crutchfield because an online chat rep can tell you what you need and provide a link to it right in the chat window. But Best Buy and other audio retailers both online & local can find the right stuff for you too.

Well, I've got much more knowledge in the subject than I did before this thread! That's why I love this forum. I'm gonna kick around crutchfield and see what the options are. We've got a new baby due any day now so the budget constraints are pretty tight, but it sounds like it can be done with quality on a reasonable budget.
