Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum & I own a 1976 Ford F100 custom pickup & are trying to figure out what the engine size is. My VIN # is F10BND01244. I've heard if you can decode the VIN, you can tell the engine size. Any help greatly appreciated.
(300) = 300 cubic inch (I-6) = inline 6 cylinder (1V)= 1 barrel carburetor. The "V" stands for venturi, the carburetor's "barrel". A four barrel carburetor would be listed as a 4V.
Five bolts means it's an FE series engine. That's going to be 352/360/390/406/410/427/428. With the exception of the 427, the only way to be sure of exactly which engine you've got is to measure the bore and stroke. Odds are though, it's going to be a 360 or 390.
a picture of said engine would help us make sure it is an FE. on the skirt of the block if it has bolts sticking out i'd say 427FE, however a 427FE is highly unlikely- most likely a 360 or 390.
The VIN # on the door matches the registration. The reason I wanted to know what size engine it is among other things is I'm thinking about doing a carburetor upgrade to it.
That doesn't mean very much. What you want to do is locate the VIN that is stamped on the top rail of the passenger side frame just under the alternator on a V-8. What is stamped on the frame is definitive.
In my case ('76 F-150), the VIN on the warranty plate on the door and on the registration were the same but these did not match the VIN on the frame. Fortunately, I was able to correct the registration with the local tag office and obtain a new warranty plate from Marti.
Let's hope that the VIN on your frame matches the VIN on the registration and warranty plate.
