Correct Oil Pressure

Does anyone know the correct oil pressure for a 79 LTD II engine (though my truck is a 86 Bronco so that number may work as well)? I have searched Gary's site and still couldn't find anything. I was installing the oil pressure sender and its says 3-8 psi on the bottom. Will this be enough?

Most follow the rule: approximately 10 PSI for every 1000 RPMs.

Great! Thats a good rule of thumb I didn't know. I should never get over 6000 rpm so I should be good.

I have to ask what was the other one? Most of the time the 0-60or 0-? is what the gauge is not what the motor will put out. So if your gauge is 0-40 and the other sender is 0-40 that is the one to use.

The first sender was 3-8 psi the second one is 0-60 psi. I have no idea what the one in the dash is. It says l to h.

As a guess the 3-8 would be for a oil light. When the psi drops between 3-8 and lower the light would come on.
The 0 - 60 would be for a gauge even if it is marked" L to H".
Sometimes the owners manual will show what the L & H mean but not 100% sure on that.

Some of the more technical members will come in and explain better than I can, but at some point [mid 1980's?], the Ford engineers decided to use what some refer to as a "dummy" gauge. It looks like a normal oil gauge [L to H], but in reality, it does not actually read the oil pressure like an aftermarket gauge does. The sender is set-up so that at something like 3-8 PSI, the "fake" factory gauge shows above low and then at a greater pre-set oil pressure, the "fake" gauge shows to be in the normal range.

I initially thought you were asking what range of oil pressure an after market oil pressure should be?

If you are replacing a defective sender for the factory gauge, I would recommend finding the correct Motorcraft sending unit, so the gauge will work as originally designed.

The "rule" I quoted is what is considered a minimum oil pressure for engine safety.

I was aking what range of oil pressure an after market oil pressure should be, but for the reason of hooking up to my OEM gauge. So the 0-60 sender I installed today probably won't work then?

I've been searching for the original part, but can't find what that is. Where can I look to find the original part?
