I was thinking about swaping the rear end on my 86 F-150(2WD) for one with 4.10 gears or 3.73's. I'm not sure what gear I have now but I know it is very high, around 3.08 or higher. It has a 3spd with overdrive straight drive and I was wondering if this would cause any problems with switching things out. I know of a 9" rear end with 4.10's in it and I wanted to just swap the entire complete axles out, without paying someone to regear.
Would this work? Or would 4.10's with a 3spd w/Overdrive be way to low of a gear?
What's the truck used for?
If the years are compatible, I don't see any problem with it. I would measure, and remeasure to make sure of the fit. Check u-joint size and eveything else you are going to unbolt ti be sure you don't run into any problems. 3.08's to 4.10's is a noticable change. You're really going to notice the differance in gas and performance as compared to what you are used to.
I am hoping it really want effect my gas mileage. Most of my driving is done around 55-60mph or less. My current mileage is about 13-14 all of the time. I regeared my jeep to 4.10's and it use to have 3.07's and the gas mileage hasn't changed at all around town and highway is only about .5 to 1mpg less. I am mainly concerned with speeds around 65-70. I rarely use my truck on the highway but when I do I don't want to turn so many rpm's that I burn the motor up
Since most of my driving is at slower speeds I am thinking it may actually improve my gas mileage. The high gear I have now is really hard on gas because I live in an area with a lot of hills and it will NOT pull up any of them. I usually use 3rd gear all of the time under 60 mph because of the lack of power. If I am on the highway (on flat ground) going 65 mph or more I will use OD but I still have to gear down going up hills.
the 3.73s would be best for you, but if the 4.10s are cheap then get those and if you don't like them they will be easy to seel and you can get the 3.73s.
FarmF-150, I was wanting to sawp out the rear member also, but just the opposite as you. I want to go to a higher gear ratio because I have so much power(I don,t even use 1st gear unless towing.) and much of my driving is highway driving.
I have an 1986, F250, 7.5L,4-SP and I was told that it had a 4.11 rear gear. It may actually be a 4.10 if that is ford built.
Where are you located? I'm near Austin, TX. Possible swap?
Thanks for the advice mustange70, I am wanting to go with 4.10's.
bmuse: I live in NC, so a swap would be very difficult. I wish you lived a little closer because I would take you up on that offer!!!! It sounds like you have the exact set up I need and the same goes for mine for you. d#$n!
