so I have been giving some thought to making my old girl a 4x4 dually. my question is, what is the advantage of using the dually front wheels/hubs? Is there some unwritten rule about not using the standard 4x4 front hub assembly?

I'm running 265's on my dually wheels. Like Aaron said they are a little narrow, but I'm running 70lbs in the rear and have no uneven wear issues. For sure get the front hubs if you do it though. Again like Aaron said, it won't look right. I'm glad I did the conversion. If you tow a lot you won't regret it. I see you have 3.55's too. IMO you should do a gear swap to 4.10's with the dually. The swap to dually and 4.10's will drop mileage 3ish. It all comes down to what you use your truck for.
I hate to say it but I'm done with the 3.55s
They suck to tow with. It's hard on the torque converter getting rolling and I'm never in the right rpm band unless I'm going faster than I feel comfortable towing.
My truck will be 4:10 doolie this winter. There I said it....
