I'm looking to upgrade from my 98 Explorer to an Expedition. I was going down to Atlanta to buy one that didn't get the salt we see in the winters in Connecticut.
I read TSB 07-15-2 which seems to indicate that the plug problem occurred in the 5.4L 2V engine. It said it applied o the 1997-2004 Expedition and he 1998-1999 Navigator. Does he 2000-2004 Navigator have the problem or do they have a different 5.4L engine? Were there any 2003-2004 Expeditions that got the 5.4L 3V engine?
I didn't see that the 4.6L had the issue but I was looking for the bigger engine for the tow capacity.
Thanks - but I was hoping someone could provide a little insight as to why certain vehicles are on the list and others are not. Also if I found one with a replaced engine, I could figure out if it was subject to the problem.
The problem is strictly with the 2-valve engines. They (Ford) only designed 3 threads in the spark plug hole. The 3-valve and 4-valve engine have err... 6 I think. The 2000 and up Navigators have a 4-valve engine and have the additional threads to prevent the blowouts.
Keep in mind that if on a 2-valve engine when the spark plugs are changed; as long as you follow the procedure and torque the new plugs to exactly 13 ft. lbs. then the 3 threads will hold the spark plugs and no blowout will occur. Of course being a second hand vehicle you have no idea if it was done correctly by a previous owner or their mechanic. Because of this unknown the potential exists for the 3 threads to already be weakened even if you change the plugs and do it correctly.
