for now as I am going to take a sabbatical for who knows how long. Without an engine I have no functional truck. Been through it 10 times now and can't stop the water leak between the head and intake on one side since December 2014. Just got asked to renew my supporter status but will pass as I have nothing to add to the forum till I have a running truck. If ever after my first foray into a 390 rebuild...
Have you checked with a straight edge across your mating surfaces? Try putting a feeler gauge under the straight edge to to see if there is any thing that is warped. Could have a hair line crack some where also. Aluminum intake? famous for warping
Mike See you have been here 10 years. Hope you get the issue resolved. Don't get all shakey if you find a for sale sign in your hand, stick it on the windshield like I did.
Might I suggest you pull your Slick off to the side and then pull out one of your other classic rides then you and your wife take it for a nice, enjoyable cruise. Try to do that at least once a week for a couple of weeks.
Then I come back to your Slick and would consider stripping off anything of value disregarding the RH cylinder head and block. Once there, I'd pull out the leaky devil-child 390 engine. Locate another FE to slip in, adding, as necessary, the good parts you kept from the evil 390.
It is my opinion that you've put too much work into your nice Slick truck to let that evil 390 beat you down and keep you down. You've got too much to offer to the truck and your herd (the two '68s, & '67) is watching how you handle it.
I hope to see you back on FTE in the near future,,,,,,
The evil FE engine and that horrible intake manifold. I hate them. I truly do. That brown color on the dipstick makes me die a little inside every time. Making that manifold seal to the head and not leak has been a bane to my existence.
I keep coming back though. Every engine design has its quirks, just not all of them involve moving an 80 lb piece of cast iron around at awkward angles. I lifted one off once and that was the last time. Now I just take the hood off and use the engine hoist.
Best of luck and hope to see you back sooner rather than later.
