I have a 77 f-250with a 460 on propane.now i love the engine ive heard the proformance now is no where near how it ran on gasoline. ide love to go back to gas this is not an option up here on the wet oooops, west coast of canada as the price of petrol is quite expensive.the propane sys. is fairly old im guessing,is there any way of updating or making the one i have now work better?any input would be appreciated
Well, propane is about 130 octane, so you can really go wild with the engine. Decent RV cam, plane the heads, or put in pop-up pistons. You should be able to run around 11:1 compression with no problems. As far as updates for the system, I don't know too much about the propane systems themselves, but I am sure some around here do.
Is it dual fuel or straight LP?
Do you know the name of the equipment? Should be on the front of the vaporiser. LP performance usally suffers because the engine does not get set-up properly. As Jared mentioned if you are running LP Only you can tweak the timing and increase performance. LP requires a high intial advance but a fairly short curve 28-32deg total @ 3000-3500rpm of course if you have the facilities you can play with the curve to suit your needs.
Hope this Helps
