I am new to this forum, and fairly new to the PSD. Been having a strange problem lately. My '97 f350 has been blowing the fuse that the manual lists as protecting the dashboard gauges, and the electronic transmission control. It seems to blow at random, and all of the gauges stop working except the speedometer. I have replaced it a few times. There seems to be no difference in the way the transmission functions, and the truck runs well with or without the fuse. Any help would be appreciated.
found out what causes this!!!!! the wire that come out of the shift selectormove every time you put it in drive or park.the rubbing wears away the insulation on the bottom of wires where they rub you have to look really good to find it but its there.you have to remove the cover just below the steering wheel to expose the shift seletor. goodb luck to others!!!
Thanks! This is exactly what I've been trying to troubleshoot long-distance for my Dad. Can you confirm what color the chafed wire was so I can expedite his search?
The bible lists it as red with yellow stripe, but if I remeber right it's purple inside the shifter lever. Regardless, you've pretty much got to get a new lever or unplug the one you've got. The wires are really small and they usually break right where they go into the lever. If you never use the OD cancel button it's better to just unplug the connector anyways, but then you won't have a flashing OD light when the tranny screws up.

Reason: left out info
its the 2 wires that come out of the shift selector remove the 2 piece cover that is just behind the steering wheel then put your key in and shift from drive to park a few time and you will see the wires rubbing on the shiny piece of ( not painted) cast aluminum on column moving wires against bare metal. good luck paul
A new shifter from the dealer is around $50. Includes everything, lever, OD button wires, plug. Easy to change out.
Some helpful hints:
Unscrew the tilt lever.
Remove the lower cover.
There is a pin you must press in at the bottom of the ignition switch. It gets exposed when you remove the lower cover. There is a button that must be depressed with the key in the unlock posistion.
Then the whole cylinder pops out.
Then the top cover will pop off, and you can get to the stalk. it has a taper pin in it Tap pin with hammer & punch to loosen.
Unplug the connector and re-install the new stalk or fix the old one.
Shave the upper colum cover to not chaff again
