hello, I am seeking experience/ advice on a problem im having with a 1986 ford econoline 150, 5.0 efi 302, automatic, 75,000 miles. Ran good stunk slightly of rotten eggs going up hills or backing in the driveway occationaly than I replaced the brake master cylender(sinking pedal). started it up to test drive brakes, it had a wandering idle 500-1200 rpm, than smoothed out and ran good, brakes worked fine. I started it the next day and it was slightly worse. Started it the next day and i had to keep my foot half way to the floor surged between 500-3500 would not run without foot on gas. Now it will barely run a few seconds tops. getting spark, has steady 40 psi fuel pressure hold all day, i cant hear any vacume leaks, i blocked off the line to the booster (no change). it just came back from a 350mi trip towing a 4,000 pound car, I was behind the van and smelled rotten eggs as it climbed hills. i checked everything around the master that i could have dissconnected or broken. nothing. The only idea i have is plugged catalitic converter/s. any help would be greatly appreciated, An engine needs air, fuel, and spark. I have all three.
Very agervated at this point. any experiances/advice? Thanks
you just answered your own question. Plugged cat sounds like your problem according to your symtoms. put your hand on the tailpipe as the engine is idling. you shopuld feel plenty of air/gas blow out. if bearly anything is felt, then its pretty much clear that the cat is plugged. also, you may consider a new muffler wile yuor at it. My '85 Ranger was doing the same thing after a fresh rebuild from an oil-burning 4-banger. both the cat and the muffler were badly cloggged.
I would lok at the O2 sensors first before I condem the cat.Smelling like sulfer is a pretty good sign they are not working. You may have unplugged the when you were doing the booster since I believe the wiring is right there or they may have just quit working.
