Crazy idle problem

Ok here's my issue. My 86 with a HO 351 idles really poorly at times. Usually the truck starts right up but every so often it idles really rough and at low rpms. Other times it starts right up idles really smooth. It always runs really nicely going down the road. It's just that every so often it idles really rough at a stop light or after start up. It usually happens 1 out of 3 times I drive it. Could be hot or cold outside (although it does happen slightly more when it's cold) ...ideas?

My first guess is a sticky ERG valve. If it sticks open that's basically a big old vacuum leak and it will idle rough.

Could be...

I never thought of that actually...I've had people tel me before it was a vacuum leak but being intermittent I figured it couldn't be that...how do you check the egr valve?

Make a gasket out of thin aluminum or some sort of metal, slip it underneath the EGR to block it off, and see if the problem goes away. Your problem is intermittent, so this is probably the only way you will find out if it's the EGR or not.

Why not remove the vac hose from the EGR and plug it when it is running good?
This way it can not open and maybe hang open.

Another trick is when running bad was to hit the EGR valve with a hammer to jog it closed.

Either way no tools other than a hammer and both are easy to do.
