Looking for a new commuter vehicle and found this ranger 2wd:
2006 FORD RANGER 2WD
seeing what I can expect for mileage from these trucks, it will be used for a 60 mile-per-day, 95% highway commute. I have a corolla now but would like something I could throw a mountain bike in for after work. I have an F-350 now but she is a garage weekend queen. Thanks
You should expect around 25mpg combined city/highway. What about a mountain bike trunk rack on your Corolla? That likely gets around 38mpg? Seems like you've already got a larger truck to handle any towing/carrying needs so a ranger with average fuel economy might be redundant... Just my 02 cents without knowing all the facts.
A lot of difference, but its salvage truck if I understand 'rebuilt' title so really you will get zip for it if you decide to purchase and later move on from it. My 94 4.0 will get 19-20 on the highway at 80 mph, and I get 15 -17 around town. Have the power I need and no issues. Just read on this and ranger station people always asking how to get more out of the 4. Like you I also have an 04 PSD, yes she is a gaage queen but the vehicle of choice if we decide to travel to someplace.
Like I said my ranger is older and has a different engine but its up to you as to what ya want it for. If ya dont crave HP it could be what ya want but get the information as to what a rebuilt title is. Some places wont take as trades!

my corolla has 296K on it and is going to need tires and rust repair for the next upcoming inspection sticker. It gets around 33mpg now. I dearly miss driving a manual transmission and commute solo so I don't need something with more than 2 seats. A rack is an option but they are kinda pricey...even used. I figured a ranger might be a better alternative than dumping more money into the commuter bomb. I guess I need to take a look at it if and see how it fits me. Wanted to get a ball park of what those engines get for mileage. 25 mpg would be fine anything less than that I'd want to stick with a car...
We sold our corolla with 215k miles quite a few years ago. It was still running great, easy to work on, but the rust was becoming hard to look at. I've always driven Fords but have to admit that was a great car.
Rebuilt title is something to be careful of and certainly lowers the resale value. It can also be a bargain if the repairs were done right and you make sure to check it over well. My sister bought a salvaged Tribute 2 years ago for $2,200 that would have otherwise been valued at $5,000. She had it thoroughly checked by a mechanic first and it's worked out well for her. In the price-point we're talking about it may not get much more than scrap value in a few years anyway, salvage or not.
It sounds like you're on the right track to look at a Ranger. And it doesn't get any easier than throwing your mountain bike in the bed. Having gone from that situation to now taking my mountain bike's wheels off to fit it in the Bronco I do miss the convenience factor.
My ranger consistently gets 27-30 on the highway (depending on if I have the A/C running) and 25-26 mixed. Like Hank mentioned above, the 4 cyl doesn't have much pep. It can barely get out of it's own way if you're running the air.
Other than that it's a great running around vehicle. Last year my commute was about 100 miles a day and the truck never let me down once. I had studs on mine, and with a little weight in the back it wasn't terrible in snow either.
cheap asking price for the mileage i think. would go for it assuming no bad rust issues... you're from Maine so you know....
i used to get about 25mpg from my 4cyl on average, and it was not in the best shape...
