Noticed today a big puff of smoke when I started it but didnt think much of it. When driving I noticed it is puffing a grey smoke smells like unburnt diesel. My EGR is already deleted and no coolant is leaking. I am thinking injector issue. The truck drives and runs just fine with no issues. Am I thinking right I need to get a contribution test and see which one is acting up? Truck is mostly stock with 250k miles on it.
If you end up having to replace the injectors, Motorcraft is the way to go.
Sure, your can have it rebuilt, but it's nowhere near the quality of Motorcraft.
You should monitor your FICM voltages and see what they're doing. If the FICM main drops below 45 volts (according to Ford) it's time to repair the FICM. For me, the FICM dropping below 47 volts is warning enough for me.
Well I don't know what to do now... Stopped by the dealer and had a contribution test run and they came back and said injectors are fine it's the EGR is blown. I have a EGR that's welded shut on each end and a tune that turns the valve off. I'm a bit at a loss. I could delete the EGR I guess since I already have the tune. Any thoughts?
You can pull the EGR and see if it is wet inside. Otherwise, I would go with the injector issue. There should be a contribution fault though if it is an injector issue.
I still have power so I don't think it's cac boot but will check when I tear into it. I'm wondering if they did the balance test like I said to do. They said they did but I figured my injectors were getting weak with 250k miles on it. I guess I could pop a EGR delete kit in and put a set of injectors in it. Maybe it's time. Come to think of It did have some stiction when cold before switching to synthetic. But power seems fine just smoking....
A stud job requires that the heads come off. A big job but not too difficult if you have the tools. You don't show symptoms requiring you to go that far into the engine right now. I think that you have an injector problem only.
