Starting problems. 1986 f150

Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum. On my 86 f150 it's been starting but has a really loud grinding noise. Took the starter off to check the flywheel and it was fine. It doesn't start sometimes you just have to spin the motor for it to catch. But the flywheel all the way around is fine! I'm wondering if there is a starter with a longer rod and bendix you can get? It seems like it's only hitting the edges of the flywheel because only the edges of the bendix are chipped. Let me know thanks!

The starter motors are specific to the transmission. The one for an automatic is different than the one for a manual transmission.
