Well I was under the excursion yesterday just doing a good look over and greasing on it and noticed I had a couple seals bad on passenger side. I also had some movement in the outer axle shaft that was a little more than I think it's acceptable. Looks like the inner hub seal that's on the axle shaft is bad. The needle bearings look to be in good shape it's just the pressed on axle shaft seal. Is this something that is a dealer only item or can I get it at a parts store? How much am I looking at these costing?
Your description leaves me a bit confused as to which seal you are talking about, but regardless all of them are widely avaialbe Spicer parts.
Ebay, rockauto, Amazon, Napa, autozone ect
I'm mainly after the one that gets pressed on to the outer axle shaft. How much movement up and down should the outer stub shaft have if any at all? This is all on the shaft that goes thru the wheel hub.
Your axle shaft is comprised of 2 parts
The inner axle shaft and the stub shaft.
The stub shaft is the one you are talking about.
The stub shaft is located in the hub on the outside end by the locking hub splines and on the inside by both the needle bearings and the vacuum seal.
When everything is in good working order the stub shaft does havea little bit of wiggle to it, when you loose the vacuum seal it will have some play, when the seal and needle bearing go then it gets downright sloppy. Sorry I don't have an actual measurement for you. Best bet is to just take it apart and replace the worn out parts
What about the one that is on inside of knuckle? That is where most of my movement is.
The inner axle is held in place at the the differential end by the spider gears, then the inner axle seal and out the end by the seal. Without the outer dust seal in place there will be considerable movement as the axle is now using the inner axle seal as a fulcrum or pivot point ( soon to ruin the seal )
Again I don't have an actual measurement, I just use my eyecrometer.
If gear oil isn't leaking out of the axle tube at the "C" yoke then I'd just replace the out axle seal. The inner seal requires removing the differential
Ok thanks all for the help. Looks like its the vacuum seal that is bad on mine. Needle bearing looks good. Do i need any special tools to remove the old seal off the stub shaft or to install them? I know i had to do some prying on it to get it out of the knuckle.
