I took my '53 to a show last saturday. There were over 300 cars and trucks there. It was a judged show. 150 trophys were awarded, 50 first, 50 second and 50 third. There were no classes, just open class. I didn't even get 3rd place. Now I admit that my truck has some flaws(paint chips) and the engine compartment is cluttered. I plan to get it repainted and dress up under the hood over the next winter. The majority of the entrants and winners were muscle cars, mostly chebbys with shiny crate engines. There were some nice 'stangs as well, with Ford Motorsports goodies. My truck has had more modifications, more design thought, and has more HP than most of the winners.

It turns out that one of the major sponsors of the event was an online aftermarket vendor who specializes in muscle cars, mostly GMs

Most of the car shows I've been to had specific classes. They are usually the better shows.

The shows that are open only seem to have judges who have particular taste and will judge accordingly. You don't need to have the best ride to win.

Then again, if the show's judges are of limited experience, they wouldn't know a good Ford from a bad Chevy. It'd be like a Packard man judging tricked out Hondas.

I think that I'll skip that show next year.
One major problem is the recognition factor. The judges only know badges, like SS 396, Cobra etc. A Ford 400 has almost no recognition. A lot of people tell me that they didn't know that Ford made a 400.
There are no points for a true Hot Rod, one that was built from the ground up, unique instead of another copy of something.

danlee question for you. I am in delaware (but deployed for the af at the moment) and going to be rebuilding a 79 step side. My question for you is this, where did you find your parts for your bed? Any info you can give will be a big help.
Thanks

My bed is wood(Mahogony) I had boards made by a local woodworker, but new oak boards can be purchased from many on-line and mail order houses.
My metal parts are original except the tailgate, I purchased that from Sacramento Vintage Ford when I was living in CA.
I get a lot of parts from a place in Arizona that specializes in '53 thru '56 Ford F100's(www.midfifty.com). They can supply bed parts for those years.
There are other catalogs available such as MAC's(www.macsautoparts.com). I am looking through my Street Rodder mag now, and I just came across a Carolina Classics(1-800-598-4211) 1948-1979 Ford Truck Parts, I may call them myself. Another is www.obsoletefordparts.com.
Get a copy of Street Rodder mag and look through it, you will probably find others.

BTW, my mailing address is Camden, DE. I live a couple of miles from Dover AFB. When you get back and want to start your project give me a yell. (danlee_58(No Email Addresses In Posts!)).

You can get most of the parts you will need from <!-- L m c --> truck. I can't remember the web adddress, but they send you a free catalog for the year truck you have. I've bought some parts for my '80 stepside.

D58, don't get too excited lookin at 53-56 bed parts, the only direct interchange parts for the 79 bed is the fenders. I know this because mine is trash. The 79 bed is wider. I am considering swapping on a early style bed though. Don't know how good that will work. Anyone else know?
