Engine tag decode

The grandson of the gentleman I bought the 65 from said he thought the engine had been replaced with a 73. I saw this tag on the front cover and looks like 65 352. Anyone know what the other numbers mean? I suppose the tag could have been swapped over so really not sure.

The tag is the original to the truck, it does not represent anything newer than 1965.

780 = 1965 352 2V

Ford confusion: Truck catalog pic shows facsimile of a 1965 ID Tag. But, there were no 390's in F100/350's until 1968. Ford took the Passenger Car pic and recycled it.

More Passenger Car dead bang give-aways are the radiator surge tank, air cleaner, 6 bladed fan and vertical oil filter adapter.

Besides the info in the MPC that Bill shows, here's info from the 1966 U.S. shop manual which shows how to decode the same tag. Two ways to get the same info.....

Albeit, the 1965 manual would be more apropos to your situation, in this case I believe it is of little significance.

And here's a slightly later tag showing how they removed the FoMoCo in the upper right corner and changed the layout some. Can you tell what engine this is?

It's a morphodite. It's not an FE engine with that D3AZ (1973) block casting number. But, C8AZ-G could be a 360/390 bare block.

Technically, no. It's from the block of an NOS 427 side-oiler that I've had sitting here for years. So not a complete engine.

I'm sure the tag on an actual 1973 truck is different than the tag I show. I have the MPC so I'll take a look. Just having some Friday afternoon fun....

D3AE block casting number: It might be a marine engine, or a service part, since the last year the 427 was factory installed was 1968.

Yes, it is one of the NOS service replacement blocks that is drilled for hydraulic lifters so you can run them or - with a little rework - run the solid lifters.

The marine blocks had the large round brass knockout plugs on the sides of the engine for the water jackets, but not the brass threaded plugs with the large allen heads like this. The block is a work of art. A bit of cosmoline still left on it. Not sure why my pic is upside down, but there it is. The bores all measure 4.2250 give or take.

You ever check local boat shops?

I was tipped off by an FTE member who found new 312 long blocks in AK .. But the cost to ship them to LA LA Land would have left me holding the bag, due to the huge shipping costs.

There was a Hemming's ad 20 some years ago, a former Packard dealer in Anchorage had two new 1937/47 282 cid 5 main bearing straight 8 bare blocks.

I passed, horrendous shipping charges...was the reason.

There are was to ship outside Alaska for cheap. Just have to know who to contact. Key is shipping in winter. Refer trucks haul produce north and are empty south bound in winter. Summer they haul fish. I used a 52' refer to move to Oregon in 2011. I put two vehicles in it and still had 10' for household belongings. And with the refer he kept my chest freezer with a load of halibut frozen when he came out of cold weather. Whole load was $3200. Normal shipping for that kind of load was $12K.
