how high can I go?

Hello all, I have a 78 ford f-250 and I am going to put a lift on it. As of right now I have high boy front springs and 2'' blocks in the back, really it sits pretty good now but I would like to go higher.
I guess I am going to have front springs re-arched and have a new set built heavy for the rear so I can kick that block out. I looked into it and this I can have done relitively cheap, but how high can I go before I have to put a new pitman arm on. I heard they were 200 bucks or better for a good one and i really dont want to spend that much. I was told you can go a total of 5'' without changing the p-arm,but if so is this just going to put it in a bind to where it will go out in a year anyway or what? Any opinions good or bad would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot

You can go as high as you want without changing your pitman arm if you also convert it to cross-over steering. Then you also get the benefit of improved steering and feedback. Otherwise, a general rule of thumb is more than four inches above stock...

Although cross over steering works great, it's awfully expensive.

I'd spend the $200 on the pitman arm, although it may not be needed, in order to save your steering box. Leaving the stock arm on with a lift causes additional stress on the box, and replacing them is a real pain - a real expensive pain at that.
