Hello all first time posting here so please don't judge to bad. I have a 86 F250 centurion dually with 4x4 however the centurion inner door sticker is no longer on it. What I want to do is buy a new fifth wheel and tow with the f250 but the only label I have says a GVWR of 8800 lbs and the camper we want is 16k lbs. so what do you think I should do? Will she pull it?
The chart below is for '87 trucks so the tow ratings should be quite similar to yours. The highest trailer weight that I see listed is 12,500lbs and that is for a truck with a 460 and 4.10 gears.
Yes very nice truck......... I had a friend a long time ago that had one of those.....I think. I know it was a dually with a 460, anyway he bought a large 5th wheel, don't know the weight but he had a hell of a time pulling it.
As we all know those years with all vehicles were smog engines and were very low on hp and trq. On top of that the 460 was a GIANT gas hog just running solo and he said he got about 5 mpg towing.
I would definately put that one up for sale and purchase as new of an F350 diesel as possible, more power, better brakes and safer. Good luck on your journey.
Either a 3 speed automatic or a 4 speed manual. A 460 can pull but a 16k trailer would be a bit much. That will kill a 30 year old drive train designed only to run up to 12k.
A 2016 F350 SRW 4X4 Super Crew with the 6.7 and 3.55 gears is rated to 15,600. Everyone runs out of Payload before tow rating and the truck described above has about 3450 payload rating. Most 5th wheels have a pin weight 20% - 25% of towed weight so you are looking at being over both tow rating and payload rating. You are into F350 dually range. Look at the numbers and judge for yourself. Every camper sales person will tell you a F250 or F350 will pull it (they will, but safely?). I have not seen a truck salesman yet that does not get the 1000 yard stare when asked the payload of a vehicle and only one in commercial sales that knew where to find it on the vehicle. Check the payload on the vehicle you are interested in before buying as it cannot be raised no matter what you add.
Since it paid for and if you can afford it. Keep it. Beautiful truck.
If you decide on something be sure the tow rating is at least 10% more than what your looking at for a fifth wheel. Ours is heavy but they gave us a great deal on our current truck. Just don't short change yourself on capacity. We wanted to be sure we could pull thru the mountains at a 7% grade. Good luck on your search.
