I have a 1993 E350, 15 Pass. van that is used for towing a 2000lb camper. It has 2yr old rebuilt 351 that runs great. My question stems from the fact that I recently installed a Perma-Cool remote trans. filter and temp. gage in the press. line coming out of the trans. last year I installed a large after market trans. cooler as a result of cooking a torque converter and blowing the input shaft seal climbing mountains in western Maryland, the shop that pulled the trans went through it and said it looked great and replaced the torque converter and all the seals in the trans. The trans. temps still seem high. Without pulling the camper, trans. temps. range from 180 to 220. the strange thing is how the temps. shoot up to 240-260 when braking and slowing down. When normal driving resumes, temps. return to 180-190 but never lower. It is the electronic E40D trans. with 120,000 mi. on it. Is there a problem with it or are those normal temps.?
Those are a little high. My E4OD runs 180° in normal driving and chips on 200° when towing. It gets into the 220° range only when it running very slowly under load like backing the trailer in the paddock. I would be concerned about 220° unloaded and about 260° under any conditions.
I thought that they were high, the local trans. repair shop said that 200- 240 were OK. I have a hard time with that, I'm dropping by with the van tomarrow and he is going to plug it into his computer and see if the torque converter is slipping. I was wondering if that gentleman who is tranny engineer with Ford has any inputs or suggestions. Yes, the cooling system is in great shape, new radiator, new oversize trans. cooler in front of rad. etc.
