I have a '89 F-250 4X4, 302EFI that lacks, I believe, the power it should have. When I start it in the mornings it doesn't want to stay running. I have to hold the accelerator to around 2000 rpm for about 3 minutes then she's fine. When I leave for work she runs like there's no tomorrow. After about 30 minutes or when the engine warms up she gets sluggish. I have about 193,000 mile on her and have performed all required maintenance. Question is, I guess, is it time for a rebuild or what?
All inquiries and helpful information will be greatly appreciated.
If your engine is healthy, other than the problem you mentioned, I would look into a fuel injection problem. I am no expert on fuel injection, but it sure sounds like it could be in one of the sensors. I have a 93 with 220,000 miles on it and it just keeps on pluggin'. Take your truck to a good mechanic and have him check it out. 460 Joe
The problem with it not wanting to stay running sounds like a problem with the IAC (Idle air control) sensor.
When I bought my truck I had the same problem with it starting, and was looking under the hood, and found the IAC sensor unplugged, so I plugged it in, and it worked perfect after that.
So first of all check to see if it’s plugged in, you may need to clean the IAC valve its attached to the IAC sensor, you may need to replace the sensor.
You should try and run the trouble codes.
It also could be a fuel problem like 460 Joe said.
Run the coeds and go from there, okay.
Here is a picture of the IAC valve and sensor; it’s on the right side of the throttle body:
