Has anyone run the 6=8 performance set up from Clifford performance. I have a 1982 f-100 short flare side with a 4.9 l six. This set up sounds interesting however I have heard of problems, especially with their cam
I have a 300 with a Clifford intake that's been together for over 30 years with no issues. I used a Comp Cam but Clifford has been there for a really long time so I think they've been time proven and they make parts nobody else does.
I have an intake and shorty headers from them, and I like them a lot. The intake has a heat passage along the whole bottom which makes a difference especially in winter. I'm not sure if the offenhauser intakes have it or you may have to install a heated spacer or something.
I'd stay away from their cams, there has been some warnings on this site and fordsix.com saying they are manufactured with low quality, and for the high price that they ask for a cam it's a no brainer to go with a different comapny.
I've ran both the clifford and the comp 268, and I think it's fair to say the comp pulls just as hard through the entire rpm range, but after 3500 or so the comp runs away.
Clifford has some good intakes and headers, but stay away from the cams. Here's the specs on their cam if you want something similar:
A cam on the 300 is different than with many v8's. It is good to know what you intend to use the engine for before buying a cam. Is it used for work, towing/hauling, and needs the low end torque? If so, maybe the comp 268 is not a wise choice. Is it simply a daily driver?
I have a good thread over on the fordsix performance forum, entitled 351 pistons, where there is much knowledge about cams. BTW, the same thing you've read about Cliffy cams I've heard about comp lifters.
I have mine setup with a Comp 260, and to me it's always been an impressive setup for low end torque. It's in an F250 4x4 with 38" tires and it will idle in 3rd gear rolling down a dirt road but still wind out pretty good.
