I've been lurking on this site for awhile never posted. I am about ready to trade my '09 f150 for an f250/350 srw. My question is should I pick up a deal on a left over 2016 or wait?
Also I'm going to get a 6.2l ccsb 4x4. Is there really that big of a difference between the 3.73 gears and 4.10s?
Lastly this will be a daily driver but I tow a 30ft tt and I want a truck that will last through my upgrade to a smallish 5th wheel. Is there that big of a ride difference between the 250 & 350?
I'm thinking I should get the 350.
I ordered a 2016 back in March and received it a couple of weeks ago. I went with the 16 because I had been driving f150's for the past 20 years and I wanted a bigger cab than the f150's have. This cab is enormous compared to my 08 F150. Even the wife has made comments about how much bigger the cab is on the 250. The 17's are going to use the F150 cabs called cab sharing and I did sit in a 16 f150 for comparison, no thanks. I did give up some of the new features that are being offered in the 17's, but at my age most of those are just distracting anyways.
I can't really speak to the 350 vrs 250 question, but I would say if you can find one get the 4.30's. I test drove two different 3.73's and ordered mine with the 4.30's. Glad I did, especially if you are planning to upgrade to a heavier trailer in the future. The problem you will have is finding one on a lot. if you do a search on the rear end gearing you will have endless reading. You will love the truck, I find excuses just to drive my truck as it is not my DD.
You can see in my signature what I have and it just turned over 1000 miles this past weekend.
I did a lot of research before ordering my truck and the reason I ordered it was because I got the 6.2 with the 4.30 rear end. I am completely happy with the truck and for me, I cannot justify the diesel for a number of reasons.
The big question for you would be a 2016 or a 2017. Personally, I like the 2016 look of the Super Duty trucks but I know the 2017 is supposed to have a new transmission that will yield better mileage out of the 6.2. How much better? That is the big question a lot of guys are asking and nobody seems to know yet.
A leftover 2016 with 6.2 and 4.30 rear end is going to be hard to find sitting on a lot. That being said, I happen to know where some are because of all the research I did when I was looking to get mine. There is a dealer in Farmington, New Mexico by the name of Ziems Ford Corners that actually stocks all of the 6.2 trucks with the 4.30's. They have some on the lot as we speak. I have no connection to them at all other than I found them when doing research before my purchase so I want to pass that on to people who are interested in the 4.30 because 99% of the dealers stock them with the 3.73.
Good luck in your decision!
That's a real tough call right now imo. I have an '11 so obviously I may be a little biased on the looks but honestly as soon as the '17 super duties are everywhere people will stop assuming my nearly six year old truck is brand new.
So with a '16 you get a truck that's new but guys like me are driving around in six year old ones that look the same. But when you go with a '17 you're now rolling in the same cab as a f150. I dunno if I like that myself? I like the uniqueness of the superduty and I really like the paddle door handles. Going to car like door handles? Again not for me I think.
Tough time to decide.
If it was me I'd go '16 to save money and have one of the last steel bodied unique cab super duties. F350. And 4.3 gears, although my truck has 3.73 and gets around just fine. I would like the lower gearing though as I pull a trailer a lot and also just for ripping around.
I just wenr thru the same dilemma last montha 16 or 17? Not a fan of the smaller cab, aluminum body or the fact the truck is all new and will no doubt have some growing pains with the 17. so...... I bought a new fully loaded 2016 6.7, just turned 1500 miles and I love it, I did put airbags in and wow what a difference towing a 30 ft trailer.
I will wait and see what happens with the new style and may upgrade in a couple of years.
Everybody keeps saying the 2017 will have a smaller cab because it's shared with the F150.. Have any of you actually sat in an F150 lately? The front seat area is about the same size and the back seat area is huge compared to the 2016 Super Duty, in SuperCab and SuperCrew form.
I didn't say it was smaller. Just its not superduty specific. Which imo is sucky. I feel like something is 'lost' so to speak now that the 1/2 ton shares the same cab. I'm no midget by any means and I fit in my '11 just fine as do all my passengers.
But like most 'new models' I bet my opinion gradually changes once they hit the street and I start seeing them rolling everywhere. But who knows? For me the '11+ super duties are amazing looking trucks and one of the only 'new models' that I immediately liked. The '17 isn't striking me the same way. But that's just me.
The new 2017 SD has a larger cab than the 2016. It is mostly in the rear seating legroom(crew and super). My 2014 F150 crew had noticeably more room than my 2016 SD. The new trucks gain 2-3" of cab length over the current model. 4" longer wheelbase overall. Width is almost the same. I think the biggest concern over cab space is that the 2016 F150 has less "hip" room than the current SD. So leg room may increase but hip room may decrease, although the hip room width has not been released that I have ever seen.
If you can wait I would order what you want. The 6.2 is getting a power increase and the F250 will have a specific tranny just for the 6.2. You can also get the 4.30's for sure, which IMO is an absolute must.
About cab space, here is something the Ford Engineer posted:
"1. Several factors affect headroom, including cab style, seat type and position, and presence of a sunroof as you noted. Due to these factors, it is hard to say specifically that because you fit in a 2016 F-150 with a sunroof you’ll fit in a 2017 Super Duty with a sunroof. The actual headroom specification of the 2017 Super Duty stays the same or improves slightly over the 2016 Super Duty depending on cab style. However, the cab architecture of the 2017 Super Duty is very similar to that of the 2016 F-150."
I'd go with the '16 since it's a proven platform, unless you will be bothered by having a new truck that looks dated in a few months when the '17s come out.
I was in a similar situation and decided on the 2016 Platinum F-250. My company-provided work truck happens to be a 2015 F-150 XLT and I do not love it. I've been reading daily on the F-150 forums about the higher trimmed 2015+ F-150s and in my opinion Ford has cut too many corners with weight savings and electronics.
I don't like the interior layout, the cabin noise levels, seat comfort and a whole host of other issues that add up. For the top line F-150s, the leather is permanently wrinkling and the seats not only don't cool, they heat up when on the cooled setting. None of these issues have been resolved by Ford and they're all making it to the super dutys for 2017.
I thought the look might grow on me over time, but it hasn't. The final issue may be F-150 specific, but the handling over bumps is horrible. I don't know if it's due to the light body or the shock valving, but it's scary at times.
I'm planning on picking up a 250 platinum 6.7 this weekend if I can get the money right.
I just sold my 09 F150 recently, and purchased a 2011 F250 CC SB 6.2 w/3.73. I can say the rear is not as large with the seat folded up, but I like the storage behind the seats, and I do not see how that stays once the 2017 SD comes out. The F150 has NO behind the seat storage; this is how the extra room is created; imho.
I recommend going with the 2016 since first year new models always have issues, and the last years tend to have most of the 'bugs' worked out.
Everybody keeps saying the 2017 will have a smaller cab because it's shared with the F150.. Have any of you actually sat in an F150 lately? The front seat area is about the same size and the back seat area is huge compared to the 2016 Super Duty, in SuperCab and SuperCrew form.
Yes it is smaller. My Fil has a 16 F150. If you like crappy seats and a steering wheel at your ankles then by all means get one. Feels like the entire dash is at your knees.
Head room is smaller and so is leg room. I'm 6'1 and hit my head on the headliner in the 150 with the seat all way down and back.
Cross cab room is also smaller. 3 guys wide in my SD is no problem. 2 guys and a kid is all you'll get in the 150.
Unless you have a crew site truck how much does the back seat really matter? So what the rear has a an extra inch for people that may only be in the back seat for a couple hours of the trucks entire life?
Given the durability problems on the current F150 bed, there's zero reason to buy a 17 if you actually use your truck.
