About to pull the trigger on a 2016 F150 KR and would like some input on hard tonneau covers and also tool boxes. I want to go with fender well boxes, wondering what you guys like and any pics of them mounted would be great.
I travel a lot so looking for a hard cover that is secure, keeps everything dry, and easy to remove or access the full bed. My dog travels with me most of the time especially in summer he is in the truck. But I also have a kennel that I use for him in fall/winter. He's a lab loves the cold ha.
One piece fiberglass covers probably do the best job of keeping the bed dry and secure. I've used both ARE and Leer in the past. Then I switched to folding covers for better bed access. They seem just as secure however they don't seal out water as well. On my F250 I have the Revolver X2 rollup cover. I have pry marks on it, I'm guessing someone tried to pry it open.
I had a fiberglass tonneau on a previous truck. It looked great and was fairly watertight, but very heavy and took two people to remove. Then I had a Diamondback on my F-350. It also looked great and took about 20 minutes for one person to remove, but wasn't watertight. In fairness, I think the Diamondback wasn't heavy enough to push down on the plastic bed rail protectors and water could have gotten in under them.
As previous posts mentioned, many of the current folding systems work fairly well.
Sorry I don't have a pic but a buddy of mine has a 2014 Platinum with a fiberglass cover and a contoured steel box that mounts behinds the wheel well. His is a 5.5' box. Just release a lever and the box swings broadside to the tail gate for easy access.
The cover I must add lifts higher than I expected but takes two men and a boy to remove and requires a ton of storage space when not on the truck.
Here's a pic of my Peragon folding cover. The bed doesn't stay 100% dry but one learns to store valuables in a tote. The bed security is second to none.
I've got the Extang Encore tri-fold cover.Very well made, easy instillation and enables you access at front or rear of bed and comes off easily with 2 people.Plus it locks using your ignition key and NO LEAKS...
Got mine here..hope the link works
Positive points for the Bakflip's
Drain system on rails which routes any water that gets under the cover to two hoses that run out the front of the bed in the drain holes.
When folded and locked in place can carry a bike or ATV
Also when folded dose not have to be removed to haul large loads.
Has a integrated tool box that can be added.
The one negative point that I see some making is that it block your rear window, but if you use your mirrors shouldn't have any issues.
I have also had the Extant covers and loved them and find them to be high quality. But the one I had needed to be removed for my ATV when the trailer was full.
I run nothing but Craftec in my trucks. Soft cover but hinged and has gas shocks like fiberglass cover. Comes in your choice of material, color, and even available in lengths so you can run tool box with it.
Flush mount, weather seal, easy to remove, and only 259.00 from E-trailer.
I've got the UnderCover Flex and absolutely love it. The locking tailgate means it can't be opened, installation was a snap- one person, about 30 minutes. I have been through a couple of downpours that required all traffic to come to a stop, and only a few drops of water came in, otherwise dry.
I have a Retrax One on mine and it's been a good cover. It keeps my bed completely dry. Since I bought mine 4 years ago, the company has come out with the Retrax Pro. I'm planning to buy that one for my next truck.
Under cover. Mine is 5 years old and still does not leak. It is light enough for me to have it on or off in five min. Yet strong enough for me to stand on it to wash the top of the cab. Where I bought mine from the owner has a pic of a long bed Dodge with two atvs on top of an under cover. While they do not encourage such use, they are tough enough to take it.
I have had 4 Undercover solid covers.... 2 "classics" and 2 SE models. Love them. Light weight and easy to remove when you need them off the truck... especially with the supplied hanging hooks.
However, I am looking at folding hard cover for my 2015 and just can't make up my mind.... BakFlip MX4, Undercover Flex, Fold-A-Cover, Extang Encore or Solid Fold 2.0 are the ones I'm going back and forth over.....too many choices and each has something different to offer that the others don't ....which is why I can't decide
