Front Seal help

I went to pick up seals for my front wheels and the one they gave me is just a little over half the thickness of the old seal. Of course it is plastic and not a felt seal but the diameter is exactly like the old one. Is this common and will it work? Old seal National 6547 New Seal NAPA 18808. Thanks for your comments. Dave

Can't help without knowing what year and model your truck is... maybe add that info to your signature?

OE Part is 8J-1190, and it crosses to the NAPA 18808 (according to NAPA). MACs shows one that looks a lot like NAPA's. Does the NAPA one fit right? I'd rather have a rubber lip seal than felt, myself.

Yes Ross it fits the axle snug and the outside diameter is the same. Rubber not plastic, that.s good. Must be alright then. There will just be a gap between the seal and the end of the hub then. I'll see how it all fits when I slide the hub/drum on. Thanks, Dave

Actually the rubber lip will do a much better job of keeping wheel bearing grease where it's suppose to be. I think I'd just drive it flush with the hub lip and call it a day.

I was going to suggest the same, but I wondered if the seal would **** if it isn't against the shoulder in the hub? Especially since the seal is so thin. Also the lip seal may ride on the radius'd part of the spindle if it's all the way towards the inside.

Those are my concerns also Ross. I'm going to have to take a closer look and maybe post some pictures. I would feel better if it was the same size so it would fill up the area on the hub and be flush on the outer portion of the hub at the same time!

Drive the new seal in until it sits flush with the edge of the hub. Felt seals required the extra thickness to provide an adequate seal whereas the lip seals don't. And don't freak out if you drive it in a little deeper, as long as it is reasonably square to the bore and not deformed it will seal just fine.

I don't know what the hub lip looks like but if you have any problems getting the seal started you can chamfer the edge slightly. This picture is of a pinion seal but I did the same thing to a wheel seal where one of the lips was not chamfered. It make installation much easier.

Use a Dremel tool to make a slight chamfer to ease seal installation.

On a rubber seal Do Not forget to lube the back side of the seal. Otherwise they will wear out upon dry run in and will fail early.
