Long hair?
My your life be like the road
Long and wide and never ending
Here's an example. I used to get really bent when another driver pulled a stupid stunt. I took is very personally and it made me a very bad driver at times in the process of "getting even". I still feel a lot of guilt about some of the stupid and crazy things I did. A counselor talked with me about it and now, even though I still feel angry and upset, I quickly remind myself that
1. That other driver has a problem.
2. I have plenty of my own problems.
3. I'm sure as hell not going to add their problem to the ones I've already got.
It's amazing how quickly I settle right down and give that other driver a wide berth. Sometimes I even find myself feeling genuinely sorry for them and the kids that have to ride with them. I find I also enjoy driving a LOT more now.
You might try something similar. Remind yourself that those folks have a problem - why should you make it yours? I'll bet you're a nice guy but still have plenty of problems without adding theirs to your pile. An answer like "Yeah, gotta see about getting it cut one of these days" with a laugh might diffuse the situation and let you enjoy life while not taking on their problem. If you think winning a fight with them is going to change their mind about long hair you're dreaming.
Mil1ion and other previous posts made several good points and I'll add just a couple. Most folks are used to men with shorter hair - me included. Sometimes it takes me a split second to remember that it's no big deal for a guy to have long hair. It does take an effort, though, because of all the stereotypes we see in the media (as noted in previous posts). I suspect the folks you are having issues with are not the kind to put ANY mental effort into considering these sorts of issues. Now don't think that makes you better than them - just better informed about this particular issue.
The second thing is, I used to have longish hair. The ONLY reason I wear it shorter now is that it's easier for me to get grease and dirt out of and it stays off my glasses and eyes. It's more of a lazy guy thing, not a judgment of the relative merits of various hair styles. My wife sums it up this way - she says I'm socially inept and morally bankrupt. I'm starting to think she's kidding about the morally bankrupt thing after 25 years together, but with respect to the socially inept part, she's right on the money. I have no taste and freely admit it. Except when it comes to whom I marry.
Enjoy life. You'll come to find it's too damn short to get involved in everybody else's problems. And it's way too short to try to fix everybody else's problems.

But after high school I discovered something -
When it gets wrapped around the axle of a creeper, you can't just reverse direction and roll out from under. The wheels pivot 180 and keep on wrapping it tighter.https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/Images/cussing.gif
The very next day I showed up at the car shop with more like a Kenny Rogers style cut...
(I think that also qualifies as one of my most embarrassing moments)
>so don't get any crap over it. I just hate the nasty
>looking stuff I have to clean out of the shower drain every
>so often...
Oh my god, Mullets rock the house. I'd never get one but on others they rock!
My neighbor(guy) has a permed mullet, it rocks so much.

What exactly is a "mullet" hairstyle?
I was always partial to the 101st Airborne "screamin' eagle" mohawk myself. I can't wear one though. Salesman is one of my long list of jobs and older people (most of my clientel) prefer the clean-cut type.
Some days ya do wanna break free though. I was gonna get my son a mohawk for football season (which would work great 'cause his hair sticks up naturally), but his mom said emphatically- NO!
Wear it however you like it is what I say. Unfortunately, in certain places it may disqualify you from getting what you want though.Keep that in mind. People are very stereotypical-minded
When you hair gets like mine (a little less each day), you're just thankful to have some regardless of the length.

Well: Thankfully those days are gone. I had long hair from 1969 through 1979. I had some tough times. Especially in Georgia one night when I was hassled by a couple of county sherrifs. If they ever found what they were expecting to find, I would have enjoyed their hospitality for a long while, I think.
I think times have changed enough so that if all you need to worry about are snide comments, then just go about your business.
It may get in the way of job opportunities, so just do something that does'nt depend upon narrow minded people.
Icelander: I surfed from age 12 till age 18, all year long. Wetsuits and all. Best surf was in the winter anyway. All up and down the coast from NJ to Fla in summer. We would forget Fla, went once and waves were 1 foot. Storm surf there is good but it was rare. Best consistent beaches were from Bay Head NJ south along Jersey Shore, as were Virginia Beach and the NC coast. Best times of my life. Always had short hair, so as to have it dry quickly, along with my nylon baggies, in the summer.
I may return to the water, as I have noticed some RI beaches sport some good waves. I wonder if you ever lose the knack for the sport. I used to be able to knee paddle out, grab a wave, carve it up, roller coaster, and continue until it petered out. I wonder how long it would take to get it back?
