I have had it with the ride quality of my truck. its a 93 f150 4x4. It rides like there is no suspension at all. about a year ago I installed moog cc844s coil springs and rancho rs5000 shocks, anticipating a plow. now I have another truck for plowing and I was tired of how terrible and down right dangerous that set up was (it would skip all over the place and you felt EVERY bump pebble ect) so fast forward to today, im parting out a 95 f150 that rode great. so I decided to use the coil springs in my truck. now my ranchos were too long and I hated them anyway so out with those. I bought Gabriel ultras today and installed....... stiffer then a 1 ton truck. my brothers 2wd we installed Monroe gas matics and while a little better, still not what I want. my buddy recently bought a 96 f150 2wd with factory motorcrafts best I can tell (black shock no label and plastic cover) we put Gabriel load jackers in the rear cause the backs were blown out. truck rides like a dream. I bombed it down the roughest dirt road I could find and it just soaks up everything like butter. im talking 40mph on the roughest washboard road you could think of. so what gives. I just dropped $150 on these shocks so the next ones I buy need to be right.
What tires are you running, and what pressure? What's the condition of front end bushings, ball joints, tie rods? I have CC844 with Bilstein's and think it soaks up washboard well, as long as my BFG AT's are closer to 35psi than 50psi.
I am running the Moog 844 coils and 1700# leafs on the rear of my '89 F-150. I am using Motorcraft shocks all around (quad front). It is more firm than the OEM springs but doesn't bounce all over the place like you describe yours doing.
EDIT: I run the tire (P235/75R15XL) pressure at 35 front / 41 rear just like it says on the sticker on the B pillar.
I agree with both sides. Tired play a big roll, but you can only air them down so far. I don't have any unrealistic expectations on ride quality. I understand it's a truck. But it's so horrible compared to other trucks like it, and I've ridden in/owned/driven plenty of f250 and 350's that rode better. I have high hopes the motorcraft shocks tomorrow will bring me back to the truck I once had.
Update: motorcraft shocks came in yesterday. I noticed they were physically smaller then all the others both in diameter and length. Installed fronts and went for a drive. Hey! Finally a shock that doesn't feel like it's full of concrete! Went to install the backs and wanted to remove the 2" blocks I installed along time ago. Cut off old u bolts, found new u bolts were the wrong ones. Will update again after I get the rear situated
