running wide open when starting

Got a ticking in the motor was just checking valves it still ran but when i got it back together it wants to run totally wide open

Did you verify the throttle blades are completely closed? Maybe a big vacuum line unhooked letting air in? (PVC or booster) if you unplug the iac valve it should close and idle speed should be very low if it will idle at all.
