Interesting reading. Some things I didn't know if true. Only offered in F-150 EcoBoost top-end models and only with the second generation 3.5 EB. I was hoping it would be offered in the 2.7 EB. Seems to be a few weight savings as well.
It might stay in the 3.5EB for a year, then trickle into the other engines. Seems stupid though. Ram had the 8 speed as optional when it was introduced and not that limited. Get the feeling Ford wants to sell more EcoBoost engines and alienate those who want other engine choices.

Kinda like the Ecoboost engines get fancy door emblems and the Coyote V8 gets a flexfuel tailgate badge?
Kinda like the Ecoboost engines have a nice engine cover and the Coyote V8 has nothing, even though the Mustang 5.0 has nice intake and coil covers?
FWIW the 3.5 Ecoboost is the engine that needs help with MPG. The 2.7 and 5.0 do very well with real world MPG with the "old" 6 Speed.
I think all 4 engines could use a boost in fuel economy as well as towing ability. Until they work the gremlins out of the 2.7L, I see myself looking towards a Coyote in the future.
Very interesting how everyone rushes to defend the Coyote. Why in the world would a manufacturer want to alienate a customer who drops tens of thousands on one of their products?
I think the 5.0L would benefit from the added gearing more than the boosted engines, so I'm a bit surprised by the move. Of course I haven't heard anything official yet, so this is rumor mill at best at this point.
We all knew the Raptor was getting it first. So in some ways it makes some sense, but it needs to be in all engine options.
I like the Coyote because I like it's architecture. Simple design, easy to work on.
The Raptor has enough of an up charge that it can easily absorb some of the R&D costs initially.
The MPG's on the 5.0 seem to be more level from owner to owner than the 3.5L. I think the 10 speed will benefit the 3.5L more than anything. Ford has been boasting MPG's for the EB engines and unless you own one with the 3.31 or 3.15 gear sets, you may not achieve the advertised result.

Ford tries REALLY HARD to sway people away into an Ecoboost! With limited success, as the 5.0 is just as popular as either Eco with ZERO advertising or promotion.

A good portion of the ones they sell are probably to people who don't need it. They spent millions into R&D and advertising for it. "Power of a V8, fuel economy of a V6", for most of that statement, it has done well. I think the electronic waste gates will help out with economy, keeping the boost levels lower and it won't be sucking up that much gas.
Thing is, electronic waste gates have been around for a while, why did Ford decide a vacuum waste gate was better? Cost? Complexity? Took either a whole or half generation before they are implemented.
As usual, I've been following all things F150, and I'm liking what I've read about the 10 speed. At first, I thought it would be downshifting too much, but after more reading, I don't think that will be an issue. For now, I'm loving the power, fuel economy, everything, about my '15 Ecoboost!! Combined over 19 mpg so far! I usually only care about all highway mileage and haven't checked that yet, but think I'll get over 20 mpg. Hey, what's not to love about that! And, I've got diesel like torque!
