Electrical... I'm scared!!

Okay. So I mapped my two clusters and I think it will be straightforward matching up the correct wires from my harness and the F600 dash harness.

I have a question regarding what's in the pic's below.
Can anyone tell me what that black short wire with the " bulb " end might be for. It is in the same contact point as the other black wire. That goes to all the lights and the " resistor " thing?

What is that thing that looks like a little box with the orange part on top, attached to the harness in the upper left?

If you mean attached to the printed circuit , That is the CVR. Constant Voltage Regulator. That is what keeps your gauges from moving too fast. Example would be without it fuel slosh in the tank would make the gas gauge move erratic.

No I don't. That bad boy has me confused. Back in the old days Ford was Real good about a solid black wire being "ground". So having a bulb socket on the end of it doesn't make sense. Did you cut this out of your 1972 or another truck? Can you take a pic of the bulb socket end?

Question C'MON GUYS!!

Nobody knows what that wire is with the rubber "bulb" on the end of it? By the looks of it, it does nothing.

It goes in the same connector point as the black one next to it

Scared of electrical? I'm about to replace the fuel pump on my Ferrari.. its got a hairline crack and seeping fuel - not good. My credit card was trembling when I ordered the part.....

In terms of the mystery wire, just install the cluster and see what works and what doesn't work. That would narrow it down, right?

It came from a 74-75 F600 I believe is what Ultraranger told me. I have another conundrum with my 72 cluster as well. I will take a picture of my diagram tomorrow.

That's my plan right now.

Is the mystery black wire sharing the same contact with black wire next to it? Looks like it was extra from factory.

I'll add my two cents.

Because it's black I'd suspect it's a ground.
Because it's so short I'd suspect it plugs into something either on the cluster or maybe the body.

Can you take a close up of the end? That might help.

I like the suggestion to install the cluster and leave the wire disconnected. I'd hook a jumper wire up to it. Then I'd test the cluster. If something doesn't work I'd first try grounding the wire. Quickly, looking for a heavy spark which would be bad.

My schematic doesn't show anything like that but I'm looking at the 1967 schematic. The only thing that looks like it on my schematic is a ground.

It's black...I bet ground.

Get us a closeup.

Bill

It's a printed circuit board so it came from a 77-78-79.

Is that bulb end a dummy end or is it a connector? Chances are it's a ground for something optional like the tach and vacuum gauges often seen in the F600.

Ahhh, F600. I'm betting it is an extra ground wire Ford put on there in case something were to be added to the original truck's dash. Since it was in a Medium Duty truck. As an example, like something U-Haul might have added. Back then Ford sold U-Haul a TON of trucks. I'm not saying your cluster came from one of their old trucks, just using them as an example.

It's just a solid rubber end.

Dummy end. I think it may be an extra ground.

Why does it have to be from a 77-79? My 72 has a printed board.
